So you just realized when you set up your [agency](/article/whats-the-difference-between-my-user-account-and-my-agency) that you also have a user profile picture. It's very easy to set this. Just visit your "My account" page. Click the "Account settings" tab to get there:

You are a person. If you have an account then you are a user. If you are a designer then [you have an agency](/article/what-is-an-agency). Even if you are currently the only one in it. All of your stores, products, and other branded content is owned by your agency.

# Why the distinction?

If you are a Zazzle designer then this may seem strange. Zazzle refers to you as a "member" or "associate". They give you a public profile page that gives visitors a little blurb and a list of your stores. This seems sufficient most of the time.

For starters having an intermediary data entity between you and your stores allows me to make it easy for you to transfer ownership of their stores super easy. You wouldn't have to give the new owner your user account as part of the transfer.

But moreover. Some Zazzle stores have joint ownership by two or more designers. They have to share a password there. They won't have to here. And you can also invite other staffers to join your team and help out without giving out your password. Perhaps to help you manage your inventory. Or your marketing efforts.

# It's a Zazzle thing [#zazzle-thing]

If you have a large store you may have noticed that the initial import only brought in the first 1,000 (1k) products. This is not a limitation of this website. It is actually a Zazzle limitation.

For technical reasons, Zazzle's developers chose to put a cap on how many results you can see returned from any search. Try a [search for popcorn](https://www.zazzle.com/s/popcorn) for an example. You should see it indicating more than 10k search results:

But if you page your way through the search results as far as you can you'll see there are only 1k shown. To illustrate this, add "ps=100" into the URL. "ps" is short for "page size". And then "pg=9" means "page 9".

See how there is no page 10 listed? Page 9 is showing you products 901 - 1,000. There is nothing more.

That's the 1k brick wall you're hitting.

# Why does this affect the importer? [#affect-importer]

This 1k limit affects the Zazzle RSS feeds just the same as the human-friendly search pages. [The storewide product importer](/article/how-to-import-your-stores-products-from-zazzle) relies on Zazzle's RSS feed to discover products in a store. If it could see past the first 1,000 products then it could import them as well.

# Why does Zazzle have this limit? [#why-limit]

I can only speculate as an outsider. One technical reason may be just to make searches perform better. One reason may be to prevent outside hackers from burdening their servers by requesting unreasonably large result sets. As a programmer I can tell you that these are unsatisfying answers because they do other things that prevent these from causing real strains on their system.

I can also speculate about business reasons for this limitation. The 1k limit makes it harder for outside systems to collect vast amounts of data from Zazzle. Imagine writing a simple webcrawler that can gradually download Zazzle's vast catalog of millions of products in 128-item search results over a few hours of hammering their RSS feed.

There is a business case for believing making it this easy to export their entire catalog would be bad for Zazzle. In fact I can quickly think of a dozen arguments for how this could hurt Zazzle. One of the most basic is that someone could set up a mirror site and draw away Zazzle's customers from their ability to effectively market in their own way. Another is that it would be easy to generate basic aggregate statistics with which to measure Zazzle against other companies. Zazzle probably considers this important competitive information that they don't want easily discovered.

The bottom line though is that there is this 1k limit on just about every page you can think of on Zazzle that lists things. It's there and it presents technical challenges for us to deal with. That's our problem.

# Pushing the limit [#pushing-limit]

The newer version of the product importer does go beyond the 1k limit using a clever trick. Originally I was just getting the first 1k of products from your store sorted by recency (newest first). Now I add to that the results of sorting by oldest first, which can get me up to 2k products. I also then sort by lowest price and then highest price, getting me up to 4k products total. And then I sort by most and least popular, getting me up to 6k. It's not guaranteed to be 6k of course. There's bound to be a lot of overlap in the 6 different sort orders. But it's likely to get a large fraction of most stores that are over 1k.

There are several ways to get your products from Zazzle into this site. Each one has somewhat different behaviors that you'll want to be aware of.

# Enter by hand [#by-hand]

You can just create all this data by hand, one product at a time. I recommend against it. It's super tedious and annoying. There is almost no benefit to it. And you will not have the benefit of imported data like current prices, Zazzle department, and so forth. It's an option. An awful option you don't need.

# Your very first bulk import [#first-bulk-import]

Your most useful day to day import tool is going to be the one found on the store editor's "Products" tab:

Once you have [created your new store](/article/how-to-create-a-new-store) you come here and click the "Import" button on the toolbar. You'll see a helpful message so you know what's going on and can back out if you want. Although there's not much reason to.

During the first part of the import you'll see a busy-wait spinner on Import button:

And hopefully in a few seconds you will see this "toast" message pop up briefly:

I wish I could say that importing is done. But it's not done. It actually takes a long time to import all your products this first time for your new store.

# Watching your import's progress [#watch-progress]

You're a busy person. You've got things to do! You don't want to wait for a long import. But you're also really curious about what's going on. So here's a handy trick for you to try. Enter "[import]" into the search bar where your products will eventually show up. That first quick pass generated a list of new products needing to be properly imported. You'll see them listed now:

It's not going to automatically update the search results. One trick you can use is to click on that text box, add a space at the end of it, and then click away. Keep doing this trick every few seconds to satisfy your curiosity about progress.

Now you know how to properly obsess over this tedious import process.

# Why is this so slow? [#why-slow]

We live in the Internet age where you can download a monstrously large video in a few seconds. Why is this process so slow? The simple answer is that this site needs to be polite when fetching data from Zazzle. The initial lookup uses a machine-friendly RSS query. That runs quickly and is designed by Zazzle for bulk queries like this.

But this RSS fetch only gets us limited information about each product. Like its name and current price. When we want to get all the images, tags, template definition, and so forth, we have to fetch these pages like a human visitor would. Which means we have to slow down and obey the speed limits set by Zazzle. These help keep the Zazzle site from getting bogged down.

Practically speaking this means we can only fetch about one product detail every 6 seconds. So if your store has 1,000 products then it's going to take 6,000 seconds, or about 1.7 hours to fetch all of them.

# Bulk product imports after the first time [#bulk-update]

That first time hurt. Sorry about that. But going forward it should be faster and easier to import your newest products. How do you do it? Same way you did when you first imported. Go to your store's editor. Switch to the "Products" tab. Then click "Import" again.

Is it going to take a long time? It should not. What happens is it starts out doing that fast import step that takes a few seconds to see if there are any new products. If not then you're done. But let's say you created 10 new products since your last import. Then expect it to take about 20 seconds to import these new ones.

But this bulk import did more than import those new products. It also refreshed some data on all your other products. It imported the latest prices for example.

# Will bulk import undo my product's settings? [#bulk-import-undo-settings]

Did you change your product's name, description, or tags on this site to take advantage of some cool features here? When you do a storewide import you won't lose those changes. But when you go to their detail pages you will see helpful notices that there are deviations now:

This is true also if you changed these things on Zazzle and have not taken steps to update the same products here. You can use the "Use Zazzle's" button to do a quick edit and save.

# Updating a single product after you change it in Zazzle [#update-single-product]

You can re-import a product. In that product's edit page on the "Product settings" tab just click the "Import" button:

This is a more invasive import than the store one for existing products. This one will wipe out your edits of name, description, tags, and some other things where it can get something from Zazzle. It will not alter your design selection and some other things that are specific to this site.

# Importing new images [#import-new-images]

One thing neither the storewide import nor the single-product import will do is change your images. If you want to do a fresh product import that will wipe out all your images then switch to the "Images" tab for that product. Click "Import":

You will get a chance to read a quick note and back out if you don't want to do this.

# Why don't the other importers update images? [#why-other-import-dont-update-images]

Presently there is no practical way for our importer to detect changes in images on Zazzle. And even if we could, there's a good chance you will have done some curation of the images imported earlier. So we make the conservative assumption that you don't want these changed automatically.

# Triggering single product Zazzle imports by hand [#trigger-single-import-by-hand]

It's easy to tell this site to import a specific product from Zazzle. From your store editor's products tab, click "New product":

Use the "Import from Zazzle" form. All you need is the product ID from Zazzle:

Go to Zazzle. Find your product's public view page. Copy the full URL to the clipboard:

Paste it into the form. When you tab away it will throw away all the stuff in the URL not needed and show only the ID:

# Why do this by hand? [#why-by-hand]

You've got the bulk importer for the store. Why do you need this? Your new product should be visible to the public immediately. But only if they know the URL. It won't show up immediately in your store's product list until the next day. Sometimes it takes much longer.

If you don't want to wait until tomorrow to come back and run the bulk importer, this is an option.

This is also an option for getting around some strange limits of Zazzle. Like if you have [more than 1,000 products](/article/whats-with-the-1-000-product-import-limit) in your store, you can use this to input the products that are beyond the first 1k.

# Toggle what?

Your customers and other casual visitors will only see a small subset of the website meant for the general public. As a designer with one or more stores you get to see a lot more pages. And those pages are naturally more complex than the public sees.

There's a lot of stuff to learn and mentally juggle. We tried to make it as easy as possible for you to manage your stores here. One key observation is that when you are doing your work, you need to go back and forth between seeing your complex management views and the simpler public views so you understand what your customers see. So we tried to design the management tools around this assumption. Look to the top of each page for the toggle switch. "On" means you're in management mode. "Off" means you are in public view mode.

Often we talk about a given "edit page". That is a synonym for a management page. Same thing.

# Public and management page styling

You probably noticed that the website has two major page styles. This is not an accident. The public pages have a familiar white background and sharp styling. The private management pages have a colored background and somewhat different colors. This is to help keep you at least subconsciously aware of where you are as you move around this website.

A design agency is usually just one Zazzle designers but can include other designers or staff to support the efforts of those designers. An agency usually has one or more stores under it.

# Managing agents

From your "My account" page you should see the agencies you own or are an agent to. Click the "Manage" button. Scroll to the bottom of the agency editor page to the "Agents" section:

You can add an agent by typing in enough of an existing user's name until you see their name listed. Click the correct one in the list.

Decide whether the person is a manager with full permissions or is merely here to manage inventory (products, collections, etc). Check the appropriate checkbox in the "Full" or "Inv." column.

# Teaming up

Most Zazzlers are [independent designers](/article/whats-the-difference-between-my-user-account-and-my-agency) creating and marketing their own products using Zazzle and sometimes other platforms. But sometimes we team up with one or more designers to pool resources and create bigger inventories. Zazzle makes this a little frustrating because it becomes necessary to share a Zazzle login account. Which Zazzle might even see as a violation of their terms of service.

But you might also want to get help from other people with managing your business. Maybe you design products and have a friend who helps you come up with tags and descriptions. Or maybe you hire an outside social media marketing consultant to help you out.

# Agents of agencies

All an agency is is a way for you to enable more than just you to work on your print on demand business. You've got your user account and you've got your agency. Those other people on your team are what we call "agents". And you are the agency's "owner". They each have their own user accounts. No need to share passwords.

# Ownership of assets

An agency almost always has one or more stores representing the more prominent brands designers place on their products. But it's worth noting that all products, collections, and so forth related to stores should be thought of as being owned by an agency. That agency's ownership may change hands over time. But those stores, products, and so on are owned by the agency.

# Why verify my store?

Store verification challenges you to prove you are the owner of this Zazzle store by demonstrating that you can log into Zazzle and edit one of your own products. The edit is temporary.

This is actually for your protection. If not for this then any site member could create a store that mimics yours. They could potentially make your brand look bad. Or unfairly gain market insights into your products. Or possibly even redirect your customers to some other place.

# Where do I go to start?

In your store's edit page you should see a warning notice letting you know your store will stay [disabled](/article/disabling-stores-products-collections-etc) until you verify ownership. Look for the "Verify ownership" button next to the "Zazle store ID" field:

When you click it you'll see a wizard-style dialog with the tools you need to execute the procedure:

Enter the ID of your store as it appears in Zazzle. You can also just paste the URL to your Zazzle store and tab away:

If you see the above error, check on Zazzle to make sure you have it right. When it is found you'll see this:

Click "Next step" to continue:

Copy the verification code to your clipboard. Edit the newest product that is currently visible in your Zazzle store:

Save. Keep that tab open. You'll want to clear this code out later.

Click "Next step" to verify the code is found:

If you see this then it's possible there is a short delay between when you saved and when it shows up on Zazzle. Give it at least a few seconds and then click "Try again". Eventually you should see this:

Hopefully you kept that other tab open on Zazzle. Delete the text you added. Save.

That's it. You're done. Your store is verified.

So you say you like keeping secrets. Have we got a thing for you!

I was inspired by some obscure social media systems that allow me to keep notes about users I befriend. I have a terrible memory. They let me keep track of when I met people, some key moments or insights about them that helps me even when I meet them many years later.

Look on a user profile for the "My notes" button:

# What is a "code"?

When you see a "Code" text box on an editor pages, think "part of a URL". For example, the [Snuggle Hamster Designs](/a/shd) agency has the URL https://snugglehamster.com/a/shd. The "Code" for this agency is "shd".

# Manually edited codes

Some codes are totally up to you to come up with. They must be unique though. Your agency code and stores' codes must be globally unique.

I recommend favoring plain words with dashes between. Like "mary-had-a-little-lamb".

# Automatically generated codes

Other codes are just too tedious for you to come up with. Like for products. So what this site does for you is takes the product (or other entity) name and turns it into a URL-friendly code for you. For example, the [Louise Brooks in 1920's Miami Poster](https://snugglehamster.com/a/shd/p/louise-brooks-in-1920-s-miami-poster-66) product has the code "louise-brooks-in-1920-s-miami-poster-66".

You might think that changing the product's name would automatically trigger the code to change too. But it does not. Why not? Because it's very possible you have already shared your product's URL on social media sites or elsewhere. You don't want those links to break just because you made a small spelling correction or made the name a little extra spicy.

But let's say the name changed so much that you really want a new URL that looks more like your product's new name. Click the little circular arrow icon on the right side of the Code field:

You'll see a dialog pop up like this to warn you and give you the choice of whether to continue on. Just follow the instructions. You'll need to save the product before the code will change.

# Deleting versus disabling

Simply put, deleting a thing is a one-way process. Sometimes we are just permanently hiding it. Sometimes it is completely removed from the database. But to you it is deleted permanently.

Disabling is a two-way process. It's your way of hiding something from the public. You and your agents within your agency can still see these disabled things. And of course so can system administrators. But other people outside your agency cannot.

There is generally a hierarchy of disabling that is intuitive. If you disable a store, you can expect the products in that store to also be hidden. If you disable your agency, you are pretty much hiding everything about your agency from the public.

# Why disable something?

You'll have your reasons. Maybe you just created your store and have not configured it yet. It's still "naked". You need to dress it up to make it presentable to the public. Same for products, collections, and so forth.

You may choose to hide some things that are seasonal. Maybe you get your Christmas inventory ready months ahead and keep it hidden until it's appropriate.

You may choose to "retire" some old things that you are not yet ready to part with. Or which you want to keep a history of data for. Deleting is more brutal.

# What is a store? [#what-is-a-store]

So you've created your user account and [set up your design agency](/article/how-to-create-and-manage-your-agency). You're ready to create one or more stores.

If you are used to Zazzle then you probably already understand how you can have one member account with more than one store. This lets you separate your many products into well-defined brands that serve your different customers.

This site follows that same model. Except you also have the added notion of an "agency", allowing multiple people to work together without having to share a login password.

# Creating a store [#create-a-store]

There are a few ways to do so. But probably the best way is from your "My account" page. You'll see all the agencies you're part of listed. Odds are good there's only one for you. Look for the "New store" button under your agency's heading. Click that.

Enter your store's name. It will suggest a "code" based on it for you. You can change it. This mnemonic code will be used in the URL for your store. You will be able to change both of these at any time in the future.

# Disabling your store until it's ready [#disable-store]

I recommend you start by [disabling your store](/article/disabling-stores-products-collections-etc). Click the "Disable" button on the toolbar. You'll see a friendly note reminding you to enable it later. When your store is ready to go live, just come back here and click "Enable".

# Editing basic settings [#basic-settings]

Go ahead and edit your store's tagline, description, and other basic settings. They will not be automatically imported for you.

# Connecting your store to Zazzle [#connect-to-zazzle]

Technically you don't have to have your store on Zazzle too. But there's not much point right now to doing this. So you're going to need to get your store's ID from Zazzle.

Easiest way to do this is to open a new tab and go to your Zazzle store's home page. Then copy the URL from the address line:

Then come back to your store's edit page and paste the whole URL into this text box. When you click or tab away it will strip away the parts of the URL it does not need:

Click the "Save" button. Now you're ready to verify.

# Verifying ownership of your Zazzle store [#verify-ownership]

Now you need to [verify your store](/article/how-to-verify-your-ownership-of-a-zazzle-store). We need to know that you actually own your Zazzle store. This is to prevent unauthorized people from pretending to be you and easily importing your inventory and other public data. You prove your ownership by editing something in your store that we can see.

Click the "Verify" button. You should see a popup like this:

# Adding images [#add-images]

One final thing you'll want to do is polish your store's branding with 3 essential images:

The main/thumbnail image should be a 1000 x 1000 pixel square with your main logo. The banner is a 1:4 ratio big splashy image. Here's how the first two images typically play together on your store's public home page:

That third "Mobile banner" image is for people visiting on their mobile devices:

If you don't provide a mobile banner version then the site will just use your Desktop banner version and chop it down to a square to fit.
