Hairy caterpillars or Woolly Bear caterpillars are common sights in late spring through summer in Metro Vancouver backyards like mine. I can never make heads or tails of them, but they are still fascinating creatures. :)

This particular caterpillar grows up to become the Silver Spotted Tiger Moth, which is a common sight in BC thanks to the multitude of Douglas Firs in our area.

A Magnificent Bald Eagle Flies Free Postcard

This lovely profusion of small white flowers was found decorating the main "square" of the VanDusen Botanical Garden.  Bridal Wreath Spirea is relatively easy to care for, but can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide if not pruned.

Beautiful Floral Bridalwreath Spiraea Postcard

Who ya calling a turkey? I spotted this handsome male Ring-Necked Pheasant foraging in the oddest of places ... not a marsh or wild woodland habitat, but the green well-maintained grass of a heritage air park! He did not seem concerned that a couple of camera lenses was trained on him, but, from time to time, would stand up on his legs, flap his wings, and give his best rooster impression, before returning to the task of foraging. On a rather birdless day, seeing this gamebird made my day. Photographed on Good Friday 2017.

Surprised Ring-Necked Pheasant in Grass Postcard

Fall and winter bring great numbers of Dark-Eyed Juncos to Metro Vancouver--and these colorful sparrows are second in number only to the diminutive Bushtits for the most commonly seen songbirds in our yard during these times of the year. This lovely female was quite aware that the camera was trained on her, and made an extra effort to give me her best pose.

Dark-Eyed Junco Sparrow Songbird on a Limb Postcard

A Trumpet Vine sports buttery yellow flowers and a tiny, formicidic customer at the Burnaby Lake Nature House. My only other acquaintance with these creeping summer flowers has been with those of the scarlet red variety. Bokeh was unintentionally created when I focused on the flowers and leaves of my subject. Elegant Yellow Trumpet Vine Flowers Bokeh Postcard

Pyracantha coccinea or scarlet firethorn berries are popular with our yardbirds in the fall and winter, and the spiky branches give both perch and protection to our diners. Mass profusions of these tiny plump orange fruit attract American Robins, Golden-Crowned Sparrows, House Sparrows, and Black-Capped Chickadees -- a daily crowd that can depletes this great bounty within a few weeks. A number of these large butterflies were flying through the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area during our early evening visit, but this one was "kind" enough to grant us an impromptu studio session for a few minutes while it fluttered and fed from the local flora.
