Who, me? This adorable Barred Parakeet looks like it should have a halo above its head as it pulls a look of innocence at an apple half. Linnies--another of their aliases--are also available in many other colour mutations, including blue, lutino, golden, and violet. These friendly, mild-mannered, curious, and "soft-spoken" little birds will quietly observe humans. You may not know you're being watched until you notice one staring at you! Unlike the bigger parrots and macaws, Linnies are not loud talkers (but they are great mimics if started at an early age), and these traits, coupled with their sweet dispositions, make them good pets.

Lineolated Parakeet Magnet

The very social, curious, and bold Java Finch (also known as the Java Rice Sparrow or Java Rice Bird) hails from Asia. For hundreds of years, it was a very popular choice as a cage bird, and that popularity even extended to the U.S. This one exhibits the wild (normal) colour mutation.

A Beautiful American Kestrel Magnet

They're not juniper berries, but this bird--which is rarely seen here in the Metro Vancouver area--clearly isn't finicky when it comes to winter fruits. This Townsend's Solitaire (another bird for my life list) materialized on our front lawn pyracantha bush on December 9, 2015, but it required two more visits more a week later to finally get proof of this handsome thrush.

Actually, he's drying out his wings after a bath in the summer sun. Wood Ducks are some of the prettiest, most colourful waterfowl I've seen in Metro Vancouver. Comfortable both in the water and on land, they can also be found perched on tree branches--the only species of duck that can do so.

Cute Little Kinglet Causes a Stir in the Fir Magnet

Add a touch of nature to the kitchen or dining room with this whimsical, wildlife-themed sandstone coaster. 

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

Beautiful "Lady in Red" Eclectus Parrot Magnet

This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree. He proceeded to peck away at his perch, oblivious of the solitary camera lens trained on him and the many walkers on the trail.

Cute Downy Woodpecker Bird on Branch Magnet

A Trumpet Vine sports buttery yellow flowers and a tiny, formicidic customer at the Burnaby Lake Nature House. My only other acquaintance with these creeping summer flowers has been with those of the scarlet red variety. Bokeh was unintentionally created when I focused on the flowers and leaves of my subject. One of 7 Killdeer frequenting the mudflats near the pumphouse at Boundary Bay Regional Park / Centennial Beach after the first snowfall blanketed the Metro Vancouver region and turned normally flowing watercourses into frozen lakes of ice and snow. In my 2 years of birding, I have never encountered Killdeer at this time of the year (winter is a week away), let alone under the current weather conditions. Photographed in mid-December 2016 during an unseasonably prolonged cold snap.

A newly adult Canada Goose grooms itself at Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, on a cloudy fall day, the angular and swan-like curve of its neck conveying an almost regal quality to this bird. Although migratory birds in many parts of the world, some Canada Geese are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest. Photographed in early November 2016.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest!
