This lovely profusion of small white flowers was found decorating the main "square" of the VanDusen Botanical Garden.  Bridal Wreath Spirea is relatively easy to care for, but can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide if not pruned.

With a warm winter and early spring in Metro Vancouver, many flowers and fruits were ripening well ahead of schedule -- including these bright orange mountain ash (rowan) berries, which aren't normally "ready" for the birds to eat until mid-July. I was privy to a very special moment in late May 2016 when I saw this Greater Sandhill Crane father, a veteran parent, searching for wood bugs with his 3-day-old colt. It's hard to believe that such a small creature could grow up into one of the largest bird species found in Metro Vancouver!

Maybe it's just me, but whenever I see a male White-Winged Scoter, the resemblance between this black seaduck and one of main nemeses of a certain popular comic book hero is immediate and unmistakeable. The white Viking horn patches surrounding those pale eyes seem to connote something sinister. :) Much smaller flocks of this less (nasally) flamboyant (and more paparazzi shy) cousin of the Surf Scoter could be seen plying the waters of the White Rock Pier on a chilly but sunny morning in early November 2019.

Yes, there is a Pebble Beach in Canada -- on Galiano Island. This Gulf Island is blessed with an abundance of natural scenic wonders, and Pebble Beach is worth the 30-minute trek. Walkers are greeted with this stunning and breathtaking vista of sky, sea, and land at the finish of their short journey. Photographed on July 3, 2016.

Pebble Beach, Galiano Island, British Columbia Postcard

One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

Perhaps the friendliest, most well-behaved bordie collie I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. This gregarious girl introduced herself to us before her owner (retroactively) gave her permission to do so once again. While the humans talked, she neither barked--not even once!--nor chased the wildlife in the local habitat, but went quietly into a nearby field of wildflowers to mug for my lens. After she was sure that I had snapped to my heart's content, she returned to sit at our feet. Realizing that I hadn't reciprocated her greeting with some attention, though, she (rather comically) poked me with a forepaw a few times (in the same way that a 5-year-old child would tug on an adult's arm for attention) until I acquiesced with several well-deserved pats on her head, chuckling to myself that her "gestures" seemed so human! This beautiful young Peregrine Falcon -- who is being rehabilitated for eventual release -- was unintentionally vignetted when I photographed it through a hole in the fence. However, my subject knew to give me its best side!
