Like rodgersia, California Buckeye is a big draw for butterflies. I had no shortage of opportunities to capture Swallowtail Butterflies working these tiny flowers for their nectar. Photographed in mid-June 2016.

This lovely profusion of small white flowers was found decorating the main "square" of the VanDusen Botanical Garden.  Bridal Wreath Spirea is relatively easy to care for, but can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide if not pruned.

Perfectly reflected in the tranquil waters of this pond is this Northern Pintail drake. They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks almost all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Metro Vancouver's second snowstorm of the winter season finally brought the lovely and much anticipated male Varied Thrush to my backyard, where he spent the greater part of the day excavating the white stuff for tasty grubs. With their dazzling palette of orange, grey, and black hues, this reclusive songbird is a welcome sight during the monochromatic winter months. Photographed in mid-February 2019.

Stunning Varied Thrush Songbird in the Snow Postcard

I can't get enough of these well-dressed and beautiful soloists, who are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver. Until late May 2016, when I encountered a fledgling in the backyard, I was unaware that a few pairs of White-Crowned Sparrows were raising families nearby (and, as I had suspected, last year, too, in the cotoneaster bush out front!)

I'd hardly call a Spotted Towhee a cute little bird. The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie; and the black, white, reddish-brown plumage it wears all year round are "power colours". Photographed at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly afternoon in late November 2015.

This photo was selected by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, to be featured in its "Backyard Birds and Blossoms" Coloring Book (release date Spring 2017).

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! We've learned to improve the "mileage" of our anise hyssop nectar for thirsty hummingbirds ... just by adding a bamboo stake! ;) This is one of (at least) four Anna's hummingbirds who like to visit the recently opened flowers, and s/he struck a rather regal profile while drinking from the bar on an early evening in June 2018.
