Two of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful--like this handsome pair--looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.

Hooded Mergansers not only look different from your average North American ducks, but their courtship rituals are fascinating to watch, too. The males engage in plenty of frog-like croaking, head-to-back arches, neck stretching, and wing flapping -- all maneuvers which are pretty much guaranteed to get them largely unnoticed if not completely ignored from the females of their own kind (who have seen it many times before).

Sandpipers (the smallest ones are known as "peeps") and plovers are some of the most enchanting--and boldest--shorebirds you'll encounter in Metro Vancouver. The smaller they are, the more you'll see them in large flocks, feeding along the shores.  Clockwise from top left: Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling, Killdeer, and Dunlin -- all shorebirds that I photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park, an internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) for thousands of migratory and resident birds, and a spectacular place to be in the fall and winter.

This handsome fellow actually made a beeline to the wharf from which I was photographing a trio of Double-Crested Cormorants ... apparently all these avian "marina users" are quite comfortable around humans. Although they are the Queen's birds, Mute Swans are considered an invasive species in North America on account of their natural behaviours, which upset the native ecosystem, and efforts have been made to keep their numbers down. However, my subject, is just one of fewer than 300 wild Mute Swans who inhabit British Columbian waters.

WWN A Touching Moment Between Wood Ducks

The outboard motor on this male Hooded Merganser appears to be fully functional and in hyperdrive. No doubt, he was quite surprised to see any humans out during this unseasonably prolonged cold snap. He and a small flock of three hens represented their species at Boundary Bay Regional Park in mid-December 2016.

Soon to be a runway model, this handsome male Dark-Eyed Junco is showing me his best side on one of the backyard pear trees. The Oregon variety--the most colourful of the Dark-Eyed Juncos--of these sparrows is the usual variation in our backyard. Nothing heralds fall like these sparrows, which flock to the backyard in droves and add personality during the winter months.
