This is a closeup of flowering pineapple guava aka guavasteen (which resembles St. John's Wort) in the backyard. This is the self-pollinating variety, and one of the newest additions to our backyard garden. The birds have started taking notice, too. Being dark green on the avocado-shaped exterior and creamy yellow or white on the inside, though, the fruit isn't anywhere as exotic looking as the flowers.

My first encounter with the Marsh Wren, who was charming me with an enchanting and complex aria at the local wildlife refuge. These little birds are heard much, much more often than they are seen. Ever since then, 99% of the wrens I have seen are Marsh Wrens!!

Beautiful Marsh Wren Songbird in the Reeds Postcard

With flaming red mascara to match his lipstick and magnificent crest, this handsome Crested Wood Partridge looks just as flamboyant as he sounds. Our first encounter with the Roul Roul proved to be elusive and disappointing. This latest visit, however, yielded multiple encounters with five of them, including two pairs, and a full-grown offspring. None of these diminutive pheasants showed the least bit of hesitance about stepping out--which made us very careful where we walked!

Sometimes a mistake can be the path to a new technique. This Crested Iris was actually photographed outdoors under natural daylight after I forgot to reset shutter speed and aperture settings from the previous photo--which turned out to be perfect for highlighting its delicate petals.

Elegant Floral Crested Iris Shaga Postcard

It's an avalanche of cuteness when a flock of Bushtits descend on the suet feeder in the backyard. However, these hyperactive bundles rarely hold still for a photo. This young fellow was an exception to the rule; while everyone else was busy engaged in feeding on the suet or looking for insects in the trees, he was happy to look pretty on the pear tree, and I was happy to oblige. Metro Vancouver's second snowstorm of the winter season finally brought the lovely and much anticipated male Varied Thrush to my backyard, where he spent the greater part of the day excavating the white stuff for tasty grubs. With their dazzling palette of orange, grey, and black hues, this reclusive songbird is a welcome sight during the monochromatic winter months. Photographed in mid-February 2019.

Stunning Varied Thrush Songbird in the Snow Postcard

Fall and winter bring great numbers of Dark-Eyed Juncos to Metro Vancouver--and these colorful sparrows are second in number only to the diminutive Bushtits for the most commonly seen songbirds in our yard during these times of the year. This lovely female was quite aware that the camera was trained on her, and made an extra effort to give me her best pose.

One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

Add a touch of nature to the kitchen or dining room with this whimsical, wildlife-themed sandstone coaster. 

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.
