In fact, this one quietly preceded us, like a tour guide, for a hundred yards, to the cement bridge before joining a haze of other raccoons. S/he even stopped to give me a few angles ... all of which is very unnatural behaviour for a mammal who is more likely to be active at night!

The first time I have seen the reclusive Hermit Thrush perfectly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn) in the front yard. The warm yellow you see in the backyard is the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder (just a few days after this photograph was taken, those leaves all fell off).

Up to 20 of these diminutive but fearless sandpipers were braving choppy waters and 14-foot morning high tides on a sunny and unseasonably warm New Year's Day 2020, to pluck the anchovies that the pounding surf was constantly washing up on the shore just off the White Rock Pier. With their dark eyes, round heads, dainty bills, and plump bodies, Black Turnstones are fascinating creatures to watch.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! Among the largest birds we see here, Greater Sandhill Cranes are common sights in Metro Vancouver. These elegant wading birds actually prefer to be handfed bird seed at the local bird sanctuary, and I have found them to be much more delicate and precise eaters than Mallards and Canada Geese. They are quite well behaved about it, too; there is no infighting or scrabbling among their kind to be fed first.
