The first full day of snow in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, saw many fluffed up songbirds in the backyard perched on the fruit trees for most of the day, including at least two Cassiar Dark-Eyed Juncos (an intergrade of Slate-Colored and Oregon varieties), like this chubby little number here. As Buffleheads don't congregate in large flocks (4 is generally the maximum) but do keep their distance from humans and potential predators (with the exception of the odd sentry, who investigates all comings and goings of creatures other than itself), it was a pleasant surprise to see both conventions broken in early December 2016, when we spotted a flock of 30 at one of the local ponds, swimming very close to the edge of the pond -- and even anticipating handouts of birdseed! Clearly, these seaducks have become accustomized to the presence of creatures like us!

One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. This big cat was pacing restlessly around in his cage, but he did stop once, and our eyes locked through the chain link during this moment. This Eurasian Wigeon drake flew in with three American Wigeon drakes, literally crashing the party when I was photographing the Hooded Mergansers at the local pond. Plenty of surprise appearances today. Eurasian Wigeons are somewhat infrequent visitors to North America shores during the fall and winter months. This is my second encounter with the male of the former species.

Blue Herons are one of the most commonly seen and distinctive birds in Metro Vancouver, frequenting marshes as well as ditches by freeways and highways.

Usually the adults like their personal space even more than the juveniles, so it was unusual that this female did not change course -- or perhaps she was so engrossed in her hunt that she didn't pay attention to me.
