My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. Photographed on Galiano Island in the early evening of July 3, 2017.

Isn't she lovely? This female Rufous hummingbird poses calmly for my camera on the old plum tree in the backyard. With the very early arrival (and disappearance) of the males in March and April as they migrate to as far north as Alaska, we have had a veritable dearth of yardbirds. Her continued presence means that life will become much more "interesting" for the resident Anna's (particularly the males). Not coincidentally, we are also seeing more birds in the backyard now.

My second (and closest) encounter with the magnificent cheetah on a hot afternoon in September 2014 at the local zoo. This big cat was pacing restlessly around in his cage, but he did stop once, and our eyes locked through the chain link during this moment. There is something so visceral about making a connection with wildlife.

The rapture of a raptor in flight! I wanted to have a closeup of this Bald Eagle roosting at the top a dead birch tree ... but it decided, at 30 feet away, that it was time to go. The initial downstroke of its wings was the most dramatic part of its takeoff.

An adult Bald Eagle flies into the sunset at the Wireless 40 Station in Ladner, British Columbia. We saw 40-50 Bald Eagles (a conservative estimate) of various ages in this area in late December 2016--most were roosting high in the tops of trees scattered through this dog park.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! A brief detour from birding led to a chance encounter with two furry new friends at Ladner Harbor Park: a couple of adorable and oh so well behaved Papillon dogs, a very old Belgian/French breed of parti-color toy spaniels so named for their elegant, butterfly-like ears. Visiting during the much lower afternoon tide enabled us to see a total of sixteen Black Oystercatchers working the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway for clams--the highest number we have seen at this location. With their long, bright red bills and yellow eyes, these resident shorebirds are easily identifiable, even from a distance. Photographed on October 19, 2016.
