An adult Bald Eagle surveys its domain below from its lofty perch in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area. Metro Vancouver is home to thousands of these birds of prey, and seeing 25-50 a day throughout most of the year is not unheard of.

A brief detour from birding led to a chance encounter with two furry new friends at Ladner Harbor Park: a couple of adorable and oh so well behaved Papillon dogs, a very old Belgian/French breed of parti-color toy spaniels so named for their elegant, butterfly-like ears. Nothing heralds spring like Tree Swallows. These small and very approachable birds amaze me with their astonishing aerial maneuvers, and beautiful iridescent blue and crisp white plumage. My subject here enchanted a small group of photographers for 30 minutes, sitting on a wire and working the camera with his various showstopping poses.

An unnaturally bold Douglas Squirrel enjoys a surprisingly generous winter feast of millet and sunflower seed at Burnaby Lake on Boxing Day 2017. These chickarees are native to the Pacific Northwest, but this is one of the few places where I can see these native squirrels all year round.

This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

I missed seeing one of these tiny plovers in the summer, but my subject, in its non-breeding plumage, is no less beautiful for it! A rare sight for this time of the year (usually these dainty-looking shorebirds are already wintering along the coasts of the Southwestern U.S., Central America, and South America), this Semipalmated Plover was frequenting the shores of Boundary Bay at Centennial Beach during high tide, in (almost) mid-December, along with a flock of Dunlins and Sanderlings on a surprisingly sunny (and warm-for-almost-winter) day.

A male Wood Duck in all his breeding splendor poses for my lens. Wood Ducks are the most colorful all-year-round resident waterfowl one can find in Metro Vancouver, Canada, and they are equally at home in the water, on land, or in the trees -- being the only duck species in North America who can grasp logs and branches. Photographed in early February 2016.

Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.
