One of several bumblebees on the flowering carrot in our backyard. We don't usually get as many of these fuzzy insects as we do the honeybees, but the former can be quite large (defying the laws of physics and aviation at times) and generally much easier to photograph than the latter.

Save the Bumblebees Pollinating Flowering Carrot Magnet

Perfectly reflected in the tranquil waters of this pond is this Northern Pintail drake. They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks almost all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Reflections of a Northern Pintail Duck Magnet

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! Our resident adult male Anna's hummingbird has never let me photograph him at close range, but on one evening in early June 2016, he came to sit on one of the old plum tree branches, just a few feet away from me. 

Perhaps, after seeing how comfortable the four visiting Rufous hummingbirds were around me, he probably figured that there wasn't anything scary about me -- and that I might even afford him some protection from the little hellraisers. So rather than being on the receiving end of his metallic scratchy or tick-tick-tick calls, he stared for a few moments into my lens, and then went to feed from the nectar feeder before making a much less frenzied exit than was his usual style.

An adult Bald Eagle surveys its domain below from its lofty perch in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area. Metro Vancouver is home to thousands of these birds of prey, and seeing 25-50 a day throughout most of the year is not unheard of.

Anna's Hummingbird on Scarlet Trumpetvine Magnet

This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

Show off your love of nature with this wildlife-themed tile, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. This elegant wading bird is rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours that it is a conversation stopper (and starter) wherever it chooses to make its entrance. Rare, though, is the moment when it stays still long enough to get a photo of it, but got it I did, as it waited for its turn to bathe in the waterfall.

WWN African Superb Starling at the Waterfall

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging and whimsical wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory.

I encountered a party of eight (seven pictured here) juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area as September 2018 passed its halfway mark. Like the other shorebirds who normally prefer the grassier, less muddy parts of the beach to forage from, these medium-sized migratory shorebirds did not mind me in their midst. Photographed on a sunny and slightly breezy afternoon on a fairly low high tide that let me walk out a few hundred feet from shore to observe the visiting fauna in close quarters.
