I can't get enough of these well-dressed and beautiful soloists, who are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver. Until late May 2016, when I encountered a fledgling in the backyard, I was unaware that a few pairs of White-Crowned Sparrows were raising families nearby (and, as I had suspected, last year, too, in the cotoneaster bush out front!)

Beautiful White-Crowned Sparrow in the Grass Magnet

Gold on blue make such beautiful hues. Nothing attracts the honeybees more spectacularly than the huge California Lilac that blooms with hundreds of bluish-purple clusters on the front lawn. Like a magnet, this bush draws dozens and dozens of these tireless winged workers from late spring through early summer.

Gold on Blue: Honeybee on the California Lilac Magnet

An overcast day is best for capturing the scintillating pink balaclava of the Anna's hummingbird, but that doesn't mean the subject will be any closer! Sitting on the old plum tree is the adult male Anna's, who was (eventually) given the ouster/bill/boot by a visiting female Rufous hummingbird a in the mid-spring of 2015. Her cobalt blue mascara never runs! Quiet as her mate is noisy, this female Eclectus Parrot surprised me even further by choosing to perch uncharacteristically close to my lens.

Beautiful "Lady in Red" Eclectus Parrot Magnet

An early morning walk in July 2015 brings us unexpectedly face to face with the normally distant and hard to photograph Killdeer. This is the father-to-be; his mate was guarding her precious clutch of eggs in a scrape under the watchful eyes of a Bald Eagle, also nesting, not 100 feet away!

One of several bumblebees on the flowering carrot in our backyard. We don't usually get as many of these fuzzy insects as we do the honeybees, but the former can be quite large (defying the laws of physics and aviation at times) and generally much easier to photograph than the latter.

Save the Bumblebees Pollinating Flowering Carrot Magnet

My first encounter with this large and beautiful Central and South American native. Although never having met one before, somehow I knew that the bright yellow eyes, white eyebrows, and black patches around the eyes could only belong to the Spectacled Owl.

This sprawling 3 km wildlife habitat hosts the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks found in British Columbia throughout the year, plus a lively diversity of resident migratory songbird and waterfowl species. Black bear, bobcat, painted turtles, Douglas squirrels, and beavers may also be found here.

Smiling Ash-Throated Flycatcher on Hawthorn Branch Coaster

This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

I witnessed a beautiful moment of friendship between these two gorgeous chestnut horses. Were they mother and child; siblings; or simply stablemates? It didn't matter what their relationship to each other was. The importance was the now of the moment. Not even a nicker did I hear pass between them; the simple act of touching spoke volumes for both.
