A brief detour from birding led to a chance encounter with two furry new friends at Ladner Harbor Park: a couple of adorable and oh so well behaved Papillon dogs, a very old Belgian/French breed of parti-color toy spaniels so named for their elegant, butterfly-like ears. One of two American Kestrels we saw whilst driving through Surrey during BC Family Day 2016. Though not a closeup -- my subject was about 15-20 feet above my head and 25 feet away -- the sun lit him enough to capture his magnificent plumage (another photo I took of his back showed blue and orange wings--confirming his gender). My first sighting in the wild of North America's tiniest falcon, and the first time I have seen the male of the species. It surprised me to learn that insects, not songbirds, are the staples of their diet.

My first meeting with one of (at least) two Clark's Nutcrackers who were frequenting Manning Park Resort in the early morning and afternoon. Like Gray Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers are quite bold and will approach visitors in hopes of free food.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

With flaming red mascara to match his lipstick and magnificent crest, this handsome Crested Wood Partridge looks just as flamboyant as he sounds. Our first encounter with the Roul Roul proved to be elusive and disappointing. This latest visit, however, yielded multiple encounters with five of them, including two pairs, and a full-grown offspring. None of these diminutive pheasants showed the least bit of hesitance about stepping out--which made us very careful where we walked!

The fly I just caught was THAT big! This handsome male Rufous Hummingbird was photographed at one of the nectar feeders at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in mid-May 2016. These feisty little hummingbirds are a popular attraction in Metro Vancouver, and can be seen here patronizing nectar feeders from March through August, although warm spells late into the fall in 2015 saw a few overstaying their welcome until the end of October!

With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.
