The vivid red crocosmia lucifer flowers aren't just eye candy for humans -- they attract hummingbirds and insects by the score, too. Red Crocosmia Lucifer Coppertips Flowers Postcard

A young sub-adult male Anna's hummingbird was taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. Anna's Hummingbird with Orange Pyracantha Berries Postcard

Marigolds aren't just eye candy; they've been used for culinary (teas, salads) and medicinal (anti-inflammatory) purposes for hundreds of years in European cultures. These beautiful, aromatic and showy blooms bloom all summer long into fall and even until the first frost. They are a natural mosquito repellent, and may also keep flower munchers like deer from the pride and joy in your garden. Photographed in mid June and mid July 2016 at local public and private gardens.

A Medley of Red Yellow and Orange Marigolds Postcard

Hairy caterpillars or Woolly Bear caterpillars are common sights in late spring through summer in Metro Vancouver backyards like mine. I can never make heads or tails of them, but they are still fascinating creatures. :)

This particular caterpillar grows up to become the Silver Spotted Tiger Moth, which is a common sight in BC thanks to the multitude of Douglas Firs in our area.

With water beading off his inflatable crest, and a simultaneously striking and conservative palette of blacks, whites, and cinnamon brown, the adult male Hooded Merganser is one winter duck species that makes you stop and stare. They will swallow large fresh pond fish whole by stretching that normally hidden neck of theirs to a foot in length. This handsome, unperturbable gent was swimming in the ponds at the local wildlife sanctuary--not surprised to see so many humans moving in a like direction--in late December 2019.

A very curious Holstein Friesian pauses to look at us from the Alaksen Wildlife Area as the rest of its herd (obviously responding to a cattle call of some sort) lumbers on without a backward glance. Not exactly what I expected to see while birding the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in late May 2016, but Westham Island *is* full of farms!!

Perfectly reflected in the tranquil waters of this pond is this Northern Pintail drake. They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks almost all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

With their russet plumage, Cinnamon Teals are aptly named, but their beauty is often not easy to capture, as these birds make themselves scarce, even when they do put in an appearance. Rarely seen in Metro Vancouver in anything but the smallest of flocks, these small dabbling ducks are the largest of the three Teal species who frequent the Pacific Northwest in the spring and summer. When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

Isn't she lovely? This female Rufous hummingbird poses calmly for my camera on the old plum tree in the backyard. With the very early arrival (and disappearance) of the males in March and April as they migrate to as far north as Alaska, we have had a veritable dearth of yardbirds. Her continued presence means that life will become much more "interesting" for the resident Anna's (particularly the males). Not coincidentally, we are also seeing more birds in the backyard now.

Bald Eagle Fading into the Smoky Sky Large Christmas Stocking

Despite the absence of bright, vivid feathers, Bushtits are such colorful characters. Although virtually identical in coloration and size, the light-eyed females are easily distinguishable from the dark-eyed males. These small but sprightly songbirds flock to seed-bearing trees and bushes as well as backyard suet feeders. This guy was calling attention to himself at Boundary Bay's Centennial Beach on an otherwise uneventful day of birding.
