I discovered this small pacific tree frog in the backyard. How small is it? Well, the blades of grass look thick in this photo--that should give you an idea. 

The golf ball-sized hopper didn't do all that much hopping, and that let me walk the camera around it for 10 minutes, getting several closeups and different angles.

The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours that it is a conversation stopper (and starter) wherever it chooses to make its entrance. This Eurasian Wigeon drake flew in with three American Wigeon drakes, literally crashing the party when I was photographing the Hooded Mergansers. Plenty of surprise appearances today. Eurasian Wigeons are infrequent visitors to North America shores. This is my second encounter with the male of the former species.

Our resident adult male Anna's hummingbird has never let me photograph him at close range, but on one evening in late May 2016, he came to sit on one of the old plum tree branches, just a few feet away from me. 

Perhaps, after seeing how comfortable the four visiting Rufous hummingbirds were around me, he probably figured that there wasn't anything scary about me -- and that I might even afford him some protection from the little hellraisers. So rather than being on the receiving end of his metallic scratchy or tick-tick-tick calls, he stared for a few moments into my lens, and then went to feed from the nectar feeder before making a much less frenzied exit than was his usual style.

Stunning Male Anna's Hummingbird on the Plum Tree Classic Round Sticker

A young sub-adult male Anna's hummingbird was taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. Photographed in mid-December 2016.

When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

In my opinion, the male Bullock's Oriole is the most gorgeous of the blackbirds we have the opportunity of encountering on the West Coast. He sports cheery bright orange and yellow feathers that contrast with his black and white ones. This handsome fellow was, rather strangely, out in the open, perched on a pear tree in a farm, rather than being high up in the canopy of a forest as is usually the case with these blackbirds. Photographed on a sunny and warm afternoon in late May 2017.

Strike up the band! I spotted this handsome male Ring-Necked Pheasant foraging in the oddest of places ... not a marsh or wild woodland habitat, but the green well-maintained grass of a heritage air park! He did not seem concerned that a couple of camera lenses was trained on him, but, from time to time, would stand up on his legs, flap his wings, and give his best rooster impression, before returning to the task of foraging. On a rather birdless day, seeing this gamebird made my day. Photographed on Good Friday 2017.

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers.
