Although his alias "skunk-headed coot" is far from flattering, birds like these are bound to turn heads (it's apparently what the ladies of their kind want!) As close as this Surf Scoter looks, he's still some 20-25 feet away. This drakes is part of a small flock of four that ply the waters of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway.

This juvenile female Red-Tailed Hawk was being a most co-operative subject for my lens. Although not shown during the flight demonstrations at the 7th Annual Raptor Festival in Richmond's Terra Nova Rural Park, she did win a few hearts during the "intermissions."

Beautiful Young Red-Tailed Hawk Classic Round Sticker

This isn't the first time I've seen a ladybug which wasn't red and spotted, but it is certainly the first one I've been able to photograph and count the number of spots on its carapace! This beneficial insect is busy nibbling the aphids on the old plum tree leaves (note: this leaf is *not* wet; it is covered in aphid poo!)

Perched on a cherry tree is one of several resident Black-Capped Chickadees. Almost always in motion--particularly around the sunflower seed dispenser--this chubby backyard sentinel looked to be contemplating the future, with spring being just a week away. Photographed in mid-March 2018.

Cute Black-Capped Chickadee on Branch Classic Round Sticker

One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Photographed on the first full day of spring 2017.

Beautiful Harlequin Duck on the Rock Classic Round Sticker

This handsome male Red-Winged Blackbird could not wait to show me his red-and-yellow epaulettes. Every few moments, he would sing and flip up his tail at the end of his song. This summer, I discovered that these birds will "consent" to be handfed at the local wildlife sanctuary. One went so far as to land on my hand and actively solicit me for food, keeping a grip on my fingers with his (very sharp) claws while he fed for 10 minutes!

Red-Winged Blackbird on the Bulrush Classic Round Sticker

Our resident adult male Anna's hummingbird has never let me photograph him at close range, but on one evening in late May 2016, he came to sit on one of the old plum tree branches, just a few feet away from me. 

Perhaps, after seeing how comfortable the four visiting Rufous hummingbirds were around me, he probably figured that there wasn't anything scary about me -- and that I might even afford him some protection from the little hellraisers. So rather than being on the receiving end of his metallic scratchy or tick-tick-tick calls, he stared for a few moments into my lens, and then went to feed from the nectar feeder before making a much less frenzied exit than was his usual style.

Stunning Male Anna's Hummingbird on the Plum Tree Classic Round Sticker

One of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful--like this handsome adult male--looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of this sandpiper species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.
