I could not ask for a better pose from this Wood Duck. For some reason, the profile of this drake makes me think that he's got a Velo helmet built onto his head. The Wood Ducks don't wait to be tossed seed -- they help themselves to the squirrel proof feeders located throughout the refuge.

The smallest shorebirds (and sandpipers) to visit North American shores during the summer, Least Sandpipers can be seen feeding in small flocks on the mudflats of local wildlife areas. The yellowish green legs (when not covered in mud) of these sparrow-sized "peeps" make it easy to ID them and separate them from their similarly-sized cousins, the Western Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers, with whom they have been known to associate with in mixed flocks. It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) three such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden. Photographed in July 2016.

Big Blue Korean Fir Cones Postcard

With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.

That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. This handsome and tame drake was one of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

My second encounter with a male Mountain Bluebird. We are gifted, albeit very briefly, with the presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of the spring season before they head to higher ground to breed. Those stunning cerulean colors stand out on a dreary landscape, even from a distance. When he wasn't busy diving for insects on the local beach, he was highpointing it on driftwood and stalks of dessicated tansy. Photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park in early spring 2017.

Rain-Kissed Orange Asiatic Tiger Lilies Ceramic Tile

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

Sometimes a mistake can be the path to a new technique. This Japanese Shaga, a small but ornate beardless iris also rather romantically known as the butterfly flower for its delicate, wing-like petals, was actually photographed outdoors under natural daylight after I forgot to reset shutter speed and aperture settings from the previous photo.
