Spunky songbird? Check. Puffball with a peaked coif? Check. Capable of balancing a seed on the tip of its tongue? Check. Many photo ops with a bold and beautiful Lincoln's Sparrow. One always makes sure to visit the backyard in the winter and mid-spring. Photographed in late February 2018, after a few days of heavy snowfall that deposited 6-7 inches in Metro Vancouver.

Cute Spunky Lincoln's Sparrow Songbird Postcard

Like rodgersia, California Buckeye is a big draw for butterflies. I had no shortage of opportunities to capture Swallowtail Butterflies working these tiny flowers for their nectar. Photographed in mid-June 2016.

Swallowtail Butterfly on Buckeye Flower Postcard

It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) two such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden.

Big Blue Korean Fir Cones Postcard

A young sub-adult male Anna's hummingbird was taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. Photographed in mid-December 2016.

Anna's Hummingbird with Orange Pyracantha Berries Postcard

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans.

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. Photographed in late August 2016.

Beautiful Buff-Breasted Sandpiper at the Beach Postcard

While photographing summer blossoms in the backyard, I turned around and saw this orange beetle staring at me as it clutched at the topmost leaf of the obedient plant. It was an opportunity I could not pass up! Soldier Beetles are beneficial insects, pollinating flowers as they sup on nectar, and eating pests like aphids.

Cute Soldier Beetle Bug on False Dragonhead Postcard

One of many honeybees who were pollinating echinacea at the UBC Botanical Garden. I liked the way the spiny heart of these coneflowers, with its orange-red tips, was captured. Photographed in late August 2016.

Beautiful Honeybee Pollinating a Coneflower Postcard

Nothing draws the honeybees in mid/late May through June like the huge California Lilac that blooms with hundreds of bluish-purple clusters on the front lawn. In fact, this bush resembles a purple beehive in late spring/early summer when these tiny winged marvels congregate.

Keep notes, reminders, and more in this cat-themed journal.

You'd never guess, from her playful and youthful manner, that Stella is actually 10 to 12 years older than she looks! This indoor sweetie is as likely to cuddle up to the laps of strangers as she is to those of her regular pair of humans, but she knows how to puts her paw down as far as dogs (especially big dogs) are concerned.

Add a touch of nature to the bedroom or living room with this whimsical, wildlife-themed throw.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! Photographed in late August 2016.

Celebrate furry whimsy, and raise a beer (or your favorite drink) with this cute, pet-themed can cooler, which features the intelligent, well-mannered, and gorgeous Papillon.

A brief detour from birding led to a chance encounter with two furry new friends at Ladner Harbor Park: a couple of adorable and oh so well behaved Papillon dogs, a very old Belgian/French breed of parti-color toy spaniels so named for their elegant, butterfly-like ears. Photographed in early October 2022.

Nothing heralds spring like Tree Swallows. These small and very approachable birds amaze me with their astonishing aerial maneuvers and beautiful iridescent blue plumage.

A female Great Horned Owl wows the crowds at the Seventh Annual Raptor Festival in Terra Nova Rural Park, Richmond. Owls have ears that are not level with each other — one is higher than the other, and each earhole is even angled a bit differently too. Quite the sound system.

Add color and a touch of nature to your footwear with these floral-themed afridrilles, which feature a stunning and colorful medley of osteospermums aka African daisies or daisybushes. Add a touch of nature to every room in your home with this floral-themed switchplate cover!

I couldn't find an angle I liked with this two-tone Triandrus Daffodil until I did a few macro shots of it, and the seeming randomness of the streaks of red running rampant through this bright yellow flower seemed to me like a chaotically natural expression of art.
