The first time I saw this small winged predator, it made its cameo in the backyard, to the dismay of the songbird regulars. Even though I (rather noisily) opened a window of the sunroom to get a shot of it, it made no move to move. Instead, it surveyed the grounds below it and the trees above, almost patiently, and methodically, before turning its bright yellow eyes on the photographer.

Avian Royalty: Eastern Kingbird Classic Round Sticker

As with many yellow summer birds on my watch list, I have been pursuing this beautiful warbler and prolific singer for quite some time. Two years ago, I heard his trademark witchety-witchety-witchety birdsong and have since gotten few and frequently shaded glimpses of his rakish black mask and bright yellow breast through local shrubs and bushes. 2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. We had our first trio of Rufous hummingbirds arrive in the backyard in early April 2017. This adult male was uncharacteristically taken with the early-blooming flowering currant bush and the sextet of hummingbird feeders scattered throughout the area, and stayed for a week--a real treat, considering most of the adult males usually only stay a day, passing through to more northern climes (Alaska) for the breeding season. Getting a decent shot of him has been a cat-and-mouse game, however, and this pose of him on the cherry tree (with his flashing reddish gorget and rufous feathers) was only possible because my subject did not know that he was being photographed.

A fairly wet early fall in late October 2013, followed by a spell of dryless days, and almost two weeks of unremitting fog, provided the perfect environment with which to carpet bomb our verdant property with mushrooms. This amounted to about 10 lbs of fungi! You can see how they are literally growing on top of each other. We could not walk two steps without stumbling over one (or three)! Unfortunately, unsure of their edibility, and not being mycologists, we could not chance eating them.

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

Those of you familiar with famous paintings will realize that this is a wildlife spoof of one which sold for quite the pretty penny in 2005. I couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph this out-of-water pair of Northern Pintails at the local wildlife habitat. They were so well behaved and photogenic, and their pose naturally mimicked the subjects of Grant Wood's American Gothic, that to not capture them this way would have been artistically negligent. :)

A young sub-adult male Anna's hummingbird was taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. Celebrate nature with these sticky notes, which feature a solitary shorebird at the beach.

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of the species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.
