Although this handsome and talented singer--garbed in dazzling whites, crisp blacks, rich brown streaks, and a yellow/green cap--was quick to regale us with his cheery, energetic aria on many occasions, opportunities to photograph him on the local mountain flora were few and far between. His presence was a delight to local birders like myself, for this songbird is a very rare sight in the West; Chestnut-Sided Warblers are normally found in the Canadian Prairies and provinces eastward. If you've been blessed with triplets, then this whimsical and heartwarming baby shower invitation postcard is for you! 

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. My young subjects were only too willing to oblige for my lens. Photographed in late May 2020.

Strikingly colored winterberries have already ripened by late fall at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. One can't help but be dazzled by the scarlet masses of this deciduous holly tree, which keep their crimson hues all the way through winter (if they haven't already been eaten by birds).

The vivid red crocosmia lucifer flowers aren't just eye candy for humans -- they attract hummingbirds and insects by the score, too. One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

The only Rufous Hummingbird I was able to locate -- and photograph at Iona Island on March 25, 2016. He flashed his stunning gorget very briefly -- unfortunately, too short a time for me to get a shot of it, but he was quite "faithful" to the lower trees in this area, returning to his perches within half a minute of leaving them. He was still there, holding a small number of photographers spellbound, after we had walked the length of the North Jetty.

He made no scratchy metallic noises while perched, but did treat us to the distinctive zinging that his wing feathers make in flight, and even a few dives, clearly demonstrating the acoustic differences between the acoustic tail feather squeaks of a Rufous hummingbird and Anna's hummingbird.

I spotted this youngster sitting on this little island all by itself at Piper Spit, amongst many other recent springtime arrivals from more distant shores. I wondered if independence been foisted upon it at a very early age, for I saw neither mother Mallard nor siblings in the immediate area, and yet this precocious duckling seemed to be more than capable of fending for and feeding itself.

In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.
