A Medley of Red Yellow and Orange Marigolds Postcard

It's an avalanche of cuteness when a flock of Bushtits descend on the suet feeder in the backyard. However, these hyperactive bundles rarely hold still for a photo. This young fellow was an exception to the rule; while everyone else was busy engaged in feeding on the suet or looking for insects in the trees, he was happy to look pretty on the pear tree, and I was happy to oblige. Despite the many pots of butterfly bushes we have growing in the backyard, butterflies like this Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly who stop to drink their nectar are still a rare occurrence (we even have a butterfly motel!) This is an angled top-down shot of one. The visiting Rufous hummingbirds have also given these bushes a number of pokes.

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

7 Killdeer were frequenting the mudflats near the pumphouse at Boundary Bay Regional Park / Centennial Beach after the first snowfall to truly blanket the region and turn normally flowing watercourses into frozen lakes of ice and snow. In my admittedly short 2 years of birding, I have never encountered Killdeer at this time of the year (winter is a week away), let alone under the current weather conditions. Among the largest birds we see here, Greater Sandhill Cranes are common sights in Metro Vancouver. These elegant wading birds actually prefer to be handfed bird seed at the local bird sanctuary, and I have found them to be much more delicate and precise eaters than Mallards and Canada Geese. They are quite well behaved about it, too; there is no infighting or scrabbling among their kind to be fed first.
