Elegant Trio of Yellow Pink Daylilies Floral

A stunning statement of yellows and blacks, this handsome male Cape May Warbler has captivated crowds at Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford. This newcomer to southwestern British Columbia has been spending his winter break here since the first day of 2019 -- odd behavior for a boreal songbird who normally winters as far south as Mexico. However, he has adapted quite nicely, with tasty yellow mahonia petals and nectar, plus plenty of grubs and insects nearby!

Chasing the blue and gold: my first day with the 100mm macro lens. The allure of our front lawn California Lilac in full bloom with hundreds of bluish-purple clusters on the front lawn is irresistible to local honeybees and other pollinators. In fact, this bush resembles a purple beehive in late spring/early summer.

By far, Columbian Ground Squirrels are the most entertaining wildlife at Manning Park, and the first ones to greet us in the parking lot of Manning Park Resort. These Prairie Dogs of the West were positioned near their network of holes in the ground (or in rotted tree stumps) and often calling in an upright position like meerkats or groundhogs (when they weren't chasing each other around or kissing). We found plenty at Manning Park Resort and Lightning Lake (particularly near the picnic tables). Columbian Ground Squirrels spend the short summer bulking up on fat reserves for their hibernation period, which lasts for seven months!

The perfect greeting cards for bird lovers!  A rare moment of co-operation and tenderness between Sanderlings (who are more likely to go solo or chase each other during their hunts) in their search for snacks on the shore.

We had our first trio of Rufous hummingbirds arrive in the backyard in early April 2017. This adult male was uncharacteristically taken with the early-blooming flowering currant bush and the sextet of hummingbird feeders scattered throughout the area, and stayed for a week--a real treat, considering most of the adult males usually only stay a day, passing through to more northern climes (Alaska) for the breeding season. Getting a decent shot of him has been a cat-and-mouse game, however, and this pose of him on the cherry tree (with his flashing reddish gorget and rufous feathers) was only possible because my subject did not know that he was being photographed.

Stunning Rufous Hummingbird on Cherry Branch

Feeling a little blue? A little blue, thanks to this accommodating male Mountain Bluebird, might actually do the trick and cheer you up! The perfect notecards for bird lovers! 

My second encounter with a male Mountain Bluebird. We are gifted, albeit very briefly, with the presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of the spring season before they head to higher ground to breed. Those stunning cerulean colors stand out on a dreary landscape, even from a distance. When he wasn't busy diving for insects on the local beach, he was highpointing it on driftwood and stalks of dessicated tansy. Photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park in early spring 2017.

A curious and vocal Marsh Wren darts out of the marsh, long enough for me to snap his photo. Like most wrens found in Metro Vancouver, Marsh Wrens are songbirds that you tend to hear more of than you actually see. Photographed on the shores of the manmade Surrey Lake Park.

A Beautiful Marsh Wren in--Where Else?--the Marsh Can Cooler

The golfers on the fairway clearly didn't disturb this Eastern Cottontail Rabbit, who was busy munching away on the delicious and well-manicured greens. However, this one has discovered that Ladner Harbor Park in beautiful British Columbia is a great place to hang out and avoid the nasty snowfalls of the east. S/he's been "resident" in this forest since early November 2020 and grants an audience to whomever is willing to shell out a handout of peanuts first. Photographed in late March 2021.
