Third time (and third day!) was finally the charm with the reclusive Band-Tailed Pigeon, North America's largest pigeon. A small, paparazzi-shy, and unusually late-migrating flock of 8 of these purple forest pigeons has been in the neighborhood for 2 days, but this one finally consented to having its photo taken through a window on a fine spring morning as it perched on the shepherd's crook (after very quietly flying onto one of the 100-foot tall Douglas Firs in the backyard)! On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, a dozen of these enchanting but highly reclusive songbirds were frequenting the trees and vocalizing near the Burnaby Lake Nature House at Piper Spit. None seemed particularly concerned about the presence of photographers, and I daresay some of the subjects even worked the cameras with their pretty poses!

This juvenile Bald Eagle came within 20 feet of me as it flew over my head during my walk through the local wildlife habitat on an early spring day in 2017. We locked eyes briefly (neither really daunted by the presence of the other), and then it continued to wing its way to a copse of dead trees where several others of its kind were roosting.

As nocturnal creatures, these endowments are critical when hunting in (sometimes) complete darkness.

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of this sandpiper species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.

He's so fly when he smiles! If that isn't an eye-to-eye grin, I don't know what is! After eluding me in the backyard for a week, this male Scarlet Meadowhawk (one of two males who showed up today and briefly tussled) finally decided to come back to earth on top of one of the bamboo stakes. He didn't even mind me sticking the macro lens in his face for this closeup, which makes Little Red look like he's ready to order his favourite poison at the bar. :)

A Smiling Red Dragonfly Notebook

Make pjs, bedroom decor, bags, and so much more with this fabric, which features an adorable young male Bushtit after a sudden summer shower!

When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

I missed seeing one of these tiny plovers in the summer, but my subject, in its non-breeding plumage, is no less beautiful for it! A rare sight for this time of the year (usually these dainty-looking shorebirds are already wintering along the coasts of the Southwestern U.S., Central America, and South America), this Semipalmated Plover was frequenting the shores of Boundary Bay at Centennial Beach during high tide, in (almost) mid-December, along with a flock of Dunlins and Sanderlings on a surprisingly sunny (and warm-for-almost-winter) day.

Beautiful Semipalmated Plover at the Beach Hip Flask

Despite the absence of bright, vivid feathers, Bushtits are such colorful characters. Although virtually identical in coloration and size, the light-eyed females are easily distinguishable from the dark-eyed males. These small but sprightly songbirds flock to seed-bearing trees and bushes as well as backyard suet feeders. This guy was calling attention to himself at Boundary Bay's Centennial Beach on an otherwise uneventful day of birding.
