Doing a flyby over the local ferry causeway at very close range on an early and blustery afternoon was this adult Ring-Billed Gull. I found this photo, which captures the downstroke, to be even more dramatic than the upstroke.

It's not a Pacific Northwest winter unless you see the Varied Thrush. One of my favorite backyard birds to see (and a highly elusive one at that), this songbird has a stunning beauty to match the hauntingly beautiful timbre of its song. This handsome fellow was foraging in the backyard with several other wintering birds when I photographed him from the second floor--giving me a rare bird's eye view of t him. We almost never see them during the summer when they spend that season northwards in Alaska, but the call of the colder seasons of the year brings them back to us. Photographed in mid-January 2017.

My second encounter with a male Mountain Bluebird. We are gifted, albeit very briefly, with the presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of the spring season before they head to higher ground to breed. Those stunning cerulean colors stand out on a dreary landscape, even from a distance. When he wasn't busy diving for insects on the local beach, he was highpointing it on driftwood and stalks of dessicated tansy. Photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park in early spring 2017.

Photographing honeybees on our huge blooming California Lilac is such a wonderful challenge, and it's our small attempt to ensure future generations of these tireless little workers. We are able to enjoy the fruits of their labours in the fruits and vegetables we harvest in the summer and fall, and the colorful flowers that flourish, sometimes late into the year, in our climatically mild part of the world.

An attractive raptor with a heart-shaped facial disc, the Barn Owl is gifted with extraordinary hearing — it can even hear the heartbeats of everyone in a 30 square foot room — and silent flight, which lets it descend on and capture rats and mice with extreme stealth. As nocturnal creatures, these endowments are critical when hunting in (sometimes) complete darkness.

Our resident adult male Anna's hummingbird has never let me photograph him at close range, but on one evening in late May 2016, he came to sit on one of the old plum tree branches, just a few feet away from me. 

Perhaps, after seeing how comfortable the four visiting Rufous hummingbirds were around me, he probably figured that there wasn't anything scary about me -- and that I might even afford him some protection from the little hellraisers. So rather than being on the receiving end of his metallic scratchy or tick-tick-tick calls, he stared for a few moments into my lens, and then went to feed from the nectar feeder before making a much less frenzied exit than was his usual style.

Seems like everyone's got a weakness for nuts and/or seeds, including this partially leucistic Spotted Towhee. Thanks to the presence of many patches of white feathers where there should be black feathers on this large sparrow, he has garnered just about as much attention as the "overwintering" California Scrub and Blue Jays. Although their rattling call has become a familiar sound to my ears, it's not easy to get a photo of the Belted Kingfisher in repose. By the time I've heard this well-dressed fisher, it's usually in motion, diving from its perch on a powerline or tree limb into the waters below to snag some unwitting piece of sushi. This lady was an exception, sitting quietly on a branch in the evening sun for several minutes before flying off to her next meal. Most of the time, I tend to encounter the females, whom I consider to be the prettier of the time, with their reddish brown and blue necklaces. Photographed in late July 2016 at Colony Farms.

Female Belted Kingfisher Out on a Limb Notebook

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this wildlife-themed tie.  

When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! Saw more of the tiny Sanderlings at the Boundary Bay Regional Park beach, just before Valentine's Day 2017. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.

The second summertime flowering of our gladiolus ... this mid-August blooming produced even more striking sword lilies, with more splashes of white to contrast against the bright red hues for a candy cane like effect. Truly a Christmas moment in August!
