Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds which can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. This one was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline. Photographed on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! Beautiful Mandarin Duck in the Pond Bath Mat

I spotted this youngster sitting on this little island all by itself at Piper Spit, amongst many other recent springtime arrivals from more distant shores. I wondered if independence been foisted upon it at a very early age, for I saw neither mother Mallard nor siblings in the immediate area, and yet this precocious duckling seemed to be more than capable of fending for and feeding itself.

A Serene Barn Owl Bathroom Mat

They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Elegant Lady Tulip White Pink Flowers Bath Mat

Add a touch of nature to every room in your home with this wildlife-themed switchplate cover! The perfect choice for wildlife lovers! By far, Columbian Ground Squirrels are the most entertaining wildlife at Manning Park, and the first ones to greet us in the parking lot of Manning Park Resort. These Prairie Dogs of the West were positioned near their network of holes in the ground (or in rotted tree stumps) and often calling in an upright position like meerkats or groundhogs (when they weren't chasing each other around or kissing). We found plenty at Manning Park Resort and Lightning Lake (particularly near the picnic tables). Columbian Ground Squirrels spend the short summer bulking up on fat reserves for their hibernation period, which lasts for seven months!

Rufous Hummingbirds have usually left Metro Vancouver for Mexico by mid August, so it was a delight to see and photograph this exceedingly feisty straggler in the backyard. This little scrapper has been (successfully, for the past two days) giving grief to the juvenile male Anna's hummingbird who has owned the backyard for most of the summer (as well as the other feathered friends who visit), vigorously defending every flower and feeder in sight. This hybrid fruit tree branch has become its favorite perch, and gave me quite a few photographic opportunities. Photographed on September 4, 2016.

Adorable Rufous Hummingbird on Branch Notebook

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. My young subjects were only too willing to oblige for my lens. Photographed in late May 2020.

Perhaps the friendliest, most well-behaved bordie collie I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. This gregarious girl introduced herself to us before her owner (retroactively) gave her permission to do so once again. While the humans talked, she neither barked--not even once!--nor chased the wildlife in the local habitat, but went quietly into a nearby field of wildflowers to mug for my lens. After she was sure that I had snapped to my heart's content, she returned to sit at our feet. Realizing that I hadn't reciprocated her greeting with some attention, though, she (rather comically) poked me with a forepaw a few times (in the same way that a 5-year-old child would tug on an adult's arm for attention) until I acquiesced with several well-deserved pats on her head, chuckling to myself that her "gestures" seemed so human! 7 Killdeer were frequenting the mudflats near the pumphouse at Boundary Bay Regional Park / Centennial Beach after the first snowfall to truly blanket the region and turn normally flowing watercourses into frozen lakes of ice and snow. In my admittedly short 2 years of birding, I have never encountered Killdeer at this time of the year (winter is a week away), let alone under the current weather conditions. Photographed in mid-December 2016 during an unseasonably prolonged cold snap.
