A very young Canada Goose gosling--perhaps hatched just a few days ago--from the first crop of feathered babies at Burnaby Lake / Piper Spit--wanders old grounds with new eyes. Despite the human traffic in the area, its parents were, surprisingly, very uncharacteristically relaxed and unprotective of their small brood. Photographed in late April 2017.

Japanese Andromeda aka Pieris Japonica is one of my favorite shrubs. It is one of the first plants to flower in the spring--making it an early and obvious choice for pollinators like bumblebees and honeybees--and its slow growing nature makes it an easy-to-maintain natural border plant. Its medley of young dark red leaves, mature yellowish green leaves, and white bell-shaped flowers contrasts nicely against a blue sky and makes for and makes for spectacular landscape shots.

The first full day of snow in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, saw many fluffed up songbirds in the backyard perched on the fruit trees for most of the day, including at least two Cassiar Dark-Eyed Juncos (an intergrade of Slate-Colored and Oregon varieties), like this chubby little number here. With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.

In Memory of a Beloved Pet Memorial Ceramic Tile

In mid-August 2016, I met my first Wilson's Phalaropes. This was one of two juveniles, wandering the ponds at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, British Columbia. Much smaller than Yellowlegs, these small but elegant shorebirds are typically seen at this time of the year, although never in large flocks. Breeding females are typically larger and more boldly colored than their male counterparts -- one of the few exceptions in the avian kingdom, where the males outshine the females in style and size.

2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. This handsome guy paused on the cherry tree just long enough for me to get him in all his golden goodness. Photographed in mid-May 2017.

Beautiful Wilson's Warbler in the Cherry Tree Metal Ornament

A few minutes after leaving Westham Island, we came across this Ring-Necked Pheasant by the outside of the fence of an old farm, somewhere near Brunswick Point. I had never seen one before, either in a zoo or in the "wilds of Ladner." He did spot me trying to sneak in a photo, and hunkered down under the fence and tiptoed in the ankle-high grass. After a few moments--figuring I was gone, since I hadn't moved--he popped right back up, and that's how I got this photo.

Cute Black-Capped Chickadee with Red Autumn Leaves Mug

The Red-Breasted Nuthatches who patronize the backyard are all business when it comes to procuring sunflower seeds (although they may linger on the suet feeder). They are even quicker to dash and dine (or dash and cache) than the Black-Capped Chickadees, so it is extremely rare to see the former even perched on a branch for any length of time.
