The first full day of snow in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, saw many fluffed up songbirds in the backyard perched on the fruit trees for most of the day, including at least two Cassiar Dark-Eyed Juncos (an intergrade of Slate-Colored and Oregon varieties), like this chubby little number here. A Colorful Pastiche of Summer Annual Flowers Bathroom Mat

Add a touch of nature to the bathroom with this wildlife-themed bath mat!  Another gorgeous loner, a late migrant Whimbrel, wanders the autumn shores on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in its (highly successful) search for crabs. This wading bird--normally gone by early fall in Metro Vancouver--has overstayed its welcome, to the delight of wildlife photographers, instead of heading to South America with its chums.

This handsome fellow actually made a beeline to the wharf from which I was photographing a trio of Double-Crested Cormorants ... apparently all these avian "marina users" are quite comfortable around humans. Although they are the Queen's birds, Mute Swans are considered an invasive species in North America on account of their natural behaviors, which upset the native ecosystem, and efforts have been made to keep their numbers down. However, my subject, is just one of fewer than 300 wild Mute Swans who inhabit British Columbian waters.

This juvenile Bald Eagle came within 20 feet of me as it flew over my head during my walk through the local wildlife habitat on an early spring day in 2017. We locked eyes briefly (neither really daunted by the presence of the other), and then it continued to wing its way to a copse of dead trees where several others of its kind were roosting.

This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.
