This is a closeup of flowering pineapple guava aka guavasteen (which resembles St. John's Wort) in the backyard. This is the self-pollinating variety, and one of the newest additions to our backyard garden. The birds have started taking notice, too. Being dark green on the avocado-shaped exterior and creamy yellow or white on the inside, though, the fruit isn't anywhere as exotic looking as the flowers.

Quite fittingly, this Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly was feeding (upside down) on the blooming butterfly bush in the backyard. The clusters of these purple flowers attract other pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. Photographed in mid-July 2017.

Among the largest birds we see here, Greater Sandhill Cranes are common sights in Metro Vancouver. These elegant wading birds actually prefer to be handfed bird seed at the local bird sanctuary, and I have found them to be much more delicate and precise eaters than Mallards and Canada Geese. They are quite well behaved about it, too; there is no infighting or scrabbling among their kind to be fed first.

Also known by its less colourful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables in the hopes of free handouts.

It's babies time for birds at the local wildlife refuge! Some of these nine (of twelve -- three not shown here) adorable Mallard ducklings, floating on the water like living corks, are interested in my lens; some are not. Still, it takes a very disciplined group of Mallard ducklings to stay (relatively) still in the water. That mom of theirs must be quite the conductor!

Some regard the robin as a harbinger of spring, but a freak all-day snowfall and almost double-digit sub-zero temperatures the following morning is what brought ten American Robins calling to the rapidly dwindling supply of pyracantha berries. In my opinion, the male Bullock's Oriole is the most gorgeous of the blackbirds we have the opportunity of encountering on the West Coast. He sports cheery bright orange and yellow feathers that contrast with his black and white ones. This handsome fellow was, rather strangely, out in the open, perched on a pear tree in a farm, rather than being high up in the canopy of a forest as is usually the case with these blackbirds.
