Mid-autumn brings the return of Buffleheads to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. While one or two of these diminutive diving ducks will partake of the birdseed thrown in the water, the rest generally keep their distance from humans and the other waterfowl species.

First time in 3 years of trying that I've been able to photograph a Steller's Jay. The mesmerizingly bright blue feathers of this crested corvid grab attention wherever it goes, and it is even a master of mimicry, imitating cats, dogs, squirrels, and even man-made sounds. Subject enjoyed corn, birdseed, sunshine, and lots of attention! As for the other backyard regulars, they didn't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with this omnivore. The second time I've seen Dunlins since first spotting a small flock huddled together in their breeding plumage (with their trademark black belly patches), on a cold spring day on the Iona Jetty spit in 2010. Three were part of a larger group of 10-12, who were fraternizing with a larger flock of Sanderlings (60) and a single out-of-season Semipalmated Plover (not pictured here).

The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! It's not a Pacific Northwest winter unless you see the Varied Thrush. One of my favorite backyard birds to see (and a highly elusive one at that), this songbird has a stunning beauty to match the hauntingly beautiful timbre of its song. This handsome fellow was foraging in the backyard with several other wintering birds when I photographed him from the second floor--giving me a rare bird's eye view of him. We almost never see them during the summer when they spend that season northwards in Alaska, but the call of the colder seasons of the year brings them back to us. Photographed in mid-January 2017.
