The first time I've had the opportunity to shoot a Bewick's Wren out in the open, and at fairly close range. This beautiful long-tailed songbird must have sensed that I wanted to photograph it, and returned my curiosity with its own by posing on this branch for a few moments. Photographed in January 2017.

A mid-summer walk around Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon yielded the surprise of a raccoon. In fact, this one quietly preceded us, like a tour guide, for a hundred yards, to the cement bridge before joining a haze of other raccoons. S/he even stopped to give me a few angles ... all of which is very unnatural behaviour for a mammal who is more likely to be active at night!

There's lots to be admired when you're a Hooded Merganser. Crests are your specialty, whether you're the male or the female. The ladies have lovely cinnamon crests, and the gentlemen inflatable black-and-white numbers complemented by a one-size-fits-all black tux for all seasons with a swath of reddish brown on their sides.

A Meeting of Hooded Mergansers Trivet

We encountered four of these large and beautiful butterflies on our evening walk through the local wildlife management area. Two of them seemed to engage briefly in an aerial dogfight before going their separate ways. Anise Swallowtails are almost always on the move, so to see this one resting was a rare experience.

My first encounter with this large and beautiful Central and South American native. Although never having met one before, somehow I knew that the bright yellow eyes, white eyebrows, and black patches around the eyes could only belong to the Spectacled Owl.

I spotted this youngster sitting on this little island all by itself at Piper Spit, amongst many other recent springtime arrivals from more distant shores. I wondered if independence been foisted upon it at a very early age, for I saw neither mother Mallard nor siblings in the immediate area, and yet this precocious duckling seemed to be more than capable of fending for and feeding itself.

Perhaps the friendliest, most well-behaved bordie collie I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. This gregarious girl introduced herself to us before her owner (retroactively) gave her permission to do so once again. While the humans talked, she neither barked--not even once!--nor chased the wildlife in the local habitat, but went quietly into a nearby field of wildflowers to mug for my lens. After she was sure that I had snapped to my heart's content, she returned to sit at our feet. Realizing that I hadn't reciprocated her greeting with some attention, though, she (rather comically) poked me with a forepaw a few times (in the same way that a 5-year-old child would tug on an adult's arm for attention) until I acquiesced with several well-deserved pats on her head, chuckling to myself that her "gestures" seemed so human! WWN Golden Pheasant Between the Leaves

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers.
