Green-Winged Teals are the smallest dabbling ducks in North America, and they are generally found in larger numbers during fall and winter in Metro Vancouver. Though tiny compared to other ducks, they can hold their own, with an attitude that is bigger than themselves. While the females are unremarkable except for their green speculums (which are not always visible), the males sport a striking green eyestripe and cinnamon brown head. Those of you familiar with famous paintings will realize that this is a wildlife spoof of one which sold for quite the pretty penny in 2005. I couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph this out-of-water pair of Northern Pintails at the local wildlife habitat. They were so well behaved and photogenic, and their pose naturally mimicked the subjects of Grant Wood's American Gothic, that to not capture them this way would have been artistically negligent. :)

Handsome here played a drum solo on the neighbor's chimney. It was quite the "riveting" performance -- but should come as no surprise, as Northern Flickers have natural showmanship tendencies. When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

Although this fierce-looking falcon looks very much like a Peregrine, it's actually a Gyr-Saker hybrid falcon. Falconers crossbreed both in captivity with the hopes of producing a hybrid with the best traits of both species: in this case, the stamina of the large Gyrfalcon with the speed of the Saker falcon.

Japanese Andromeda aka Pieris Japonica is one of my favorite shrubs. It is one of the first plants to flower in the spring--making it an early and obvious choice for pollinators like bumblebees and honeybees--and its slow growing nature makes it an easy-to-maintain natural border plant. Its medley of young dark red leaves, mature yellowish green leaves, and white bell-shaped flowers contrasts nicely against a blue sky and makes for spectacular landscape shots.
