Owls are such fascinating creatures. They are front page newsmakers, drawing the interest of birders, nature lovers, and just about everyone else who has a pulse. Snowy Owls are especially charismatic; the largest owls in North America only show up in Metro Vancouver every few years, and their appearance during our winters causes crowds of admirers and fans to form and flock.

Being an escapee from an Oregon farm did not diminish the appeal of this adult male Mandarin Duck, whose flight to freedom was rewarded with a constant supply of bird seed and the company of Wood Ducks at Piper Spit. I was gifted with the privilege of his metamorphosis over many agonizingly slow months, as I watched him exchange his post-breeding plumage for the magnificent feathers and stunning color palette that make him a dream to photograph (and a hit with the females of his kind). If someone combined the adorably big head and black eyes of a Black-Capped Chickadee with the colors and bill of a Kookaburra in a Jay-sized body, they'd have the whimsically-named  Whiskeyjack. Also known by its less colorful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six of this hardy montane Canadian corvids at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables and give diners that irresistible liquid gaze of theirs in the hopes of free handouts.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. A curious and vocal Marsh Wren darts out of the marsh, long enough for me to snap his photo. Like most wrens found in Metro Vancouver, Marsh Wrens are songbirds that you tend to hear more of than you actually see. Photographed on the shores of the manmade Surrey Lake Park.

Cape May Warbler with Flowering Mahonia Adult Cloth Face Mask

During a rather warm morning in February 2019, in Abbotsford's Mill Lake Park, I was privileged to meet a handsome male Cape May Warbler, feeding on the mahonia--better known as Oregon grape. Both bird and blossom were equally odd to see at that time of the year -- the former for being in the area at all (in fact, it was the first recorded sighting of this species in Metro Vancouver) and the latter for mysteriously flowering in the dead of winter!

My friendly feathered subject (who should have been overwintering in a more tropical place like Barbados or the Turks & Caicos) was an instant celebrity, and quickly became accustomed to all the lenses pointed his way as he made himself eating or resting in the mahonia.

It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) three such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden. Photographed in July 2016.
