A very curious Holstein Friesian pauses to look at us from the Alaksen Wildlife Area as the rest of its herd (obviously responding to a cattle call of some sort) lumbers on without a backward glance. Not exactly what I expected to see while birding the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in late May 2016, but Westham Island *is* full of farms!!

Funny "We're Moo-ving!" Moving Announcement Cow Postcard

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colours of his iridescent head visible.

Cute Bufflehead Duck at the Pond Postcard

My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. Photographed on Galiano Island in the early evening of July 3, 2017.

Beautiful Pileated Woodpecker on the Tree Postcard

A most enchanting discovery in the California Lilac on the front lawn in mid-April 2017-- a young female Rufous Hummingbird, guarding "her" nectar feeder and gaining some protection from this large, cage-like bush. These migratory hummingbirds spend their spring and summer "vacation" in the Pacific Northwest, and, although smaller than the resident Anna's hummingbirds, are far feistier, often chasing the latter out of their territories for the duration of their five-month stay in the Northern Hemisphere.

Rufous Hummingbird Sitting in the California Lilac Postcard

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. This winter, we saw not one, but two Slate-Colored Juncos hang around the bird feeders in the backyard--keeping the 30 Oregon Dark-Eyed Juncos company. Photographed in late December 2017.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! An "urban" Rough-Legged Hawk perches precariously on the top of a spindly young tree in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada. I spotted this youngster sitting on this little island all by itself at Piper Spit, amongst many other recent springtime arrivals from more distant shores. I wondered if independence been foisted upon it at a very early age, for I saw neither mother Mallard nor siblings in the immediate area, and yet this precocious duckling seemed to be more than capable of fending for and feeding itself.
