My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! An unusual visitor during Pacific Northwest autumn months, the Tropical Kingbird adds a cheery bit of color to the fall with its striking butter yellow belly. This dazzling creature was relaxing in the early afternoon sun while a host of wildlife photographers quietly captured it in all its glory. Moments later, this large tyrant flycatcher was swallowing a Blue Darner dragonfly that it had swiftly and successfully hunted! Photographed in late October 2023.

Japanese Andromeda aka Pieris Japonica is one of my favorite shrubs. It is one of the first plants to flower in the spring--making it an early and obvious choice for pollinators like bumblebees and honeybees--and its slow growing nature makes it an easy-to-maintain natural border plant. Its medley of young dark red leaves, mature yellowish green leaves, and white bell-shaped flowers contrasts nicely against a blue sky and makes for and makes for spectacular landscape shots.

Japanese Andromeda Bonfire Ceramic Tile

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Photographed on the first full day of spring 2017.

 A drive down an old farm road on a warm mid-winter afternoon led me to this gorgeous adult Red-tailed Hawk perched on a power line. Said subject was unflappable and resolute in both the face of the long lens pointed in its direction and the constant flow of vehicular traffic.

An adult Bald Eagle flies into the sunset at the Wireless 40 Station in Ladner, British Columbia. We saw 40-50 Bald Eagles (a conservative estimate) of various ages in this area in late December 2016--most were roosting high in the tops of trees scattered through this dog park.
