Visiting during the much lower afternoon tide enabled us to see a total of sixteen Black Oystercatchers working the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway for clams--the highest number we have seen at this location. With their long, bright red bills and yellow eyes, these resident shorebirds are easily identifiable, even from a distance. Photographed on October 19, 2016.

Show off your love of nature with this wildlife-themed tile, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. This elegant wading bird is rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. An adult Bald Eagle surveys its domain below from its lofty perch in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area. Metro Vancouver is home to thousands of these birds of prey, and seeing 25-50 a day throughout most of the year is not unheard of.

Beautiful Bald Eagle in a Tree Ceramic Tile

If someone combined the adorably big head and black eyes of a Black-Capped Chickadee with the colors and bill of a Kookaburra in a Jay-sized body, they'd have the whimsically-named  Whiskeyjack. Also known by its less colorful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six of this hardy montane Canadian corvids at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables and give diners that irresistible liquid gaze of theirs in the hopes of free handouts.

This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

Anna's Hummingbird on Scarlet Trumpetvine Ceramic Tile

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.
