It's easy to see how laburnum got its moniker of "the golden chain tree" -- stunningly large masses of bright yellow, sweet pea-shaped clusters hang down from these mid-spring flowering trees, which we discovered during a leisurely afternoon stroll through a heavily forested area of Deering Island Park. The wood has been used for woodworking, and certain species of butterfly use it as source of food. Photographed in late May 2017.

Add a touch of nature to your laptop or computer with this elegant, wildlife-themed mousepad, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. These elegant wading birds are rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there (two more joined them a week later) during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. This is the second hummingbird nest I've found. An Anna's hummingbird second-time mother (who had just raised two babies to adulthood a few days before successfully mating again) sits on her precious nest, lovingly and painstakingly made with lichen, moss, and spidersilk.

Feline good! This l'il shadowboxer looks like s/he means business, but that stern expression belies a very friendly nature. It takes a very trusting feline to walk right up to a complete stranger, lie on the ground, and roll around several times (showing belly) in the parking lot at the Ladner Harbour Park (where it looks like a film shoot or a local festival is being set up) as if she's known you all her life. She certainly knows how to play up to the camera -- those yellow eyes never leave it (maybe she's a studio cat)! Oh, and she came by to rub my legs after she finished with her sandbath. Judging by the condition of the immaculate fur and the dainty pink collar with bells, this is clearly someone's well fed and (very) well cared for bicolour orange spotted tabby.

Beautiful Bald Eagle in a Tree Mouse Pad

Meet Ela, Teddy's high-maintenance girlfriend. Unlike him, she is an attention-seeking sweetie, and her fur is the picture of perfection. Meeting you at the gates isn't enough; this dainty, but seldom still Pomeranian will make sure that you dole out scratches and cuddles to her as often as possible, which is all the time. 

She is the happiest when she's the center of everyone's attention, which is also all the time. This has made her My Little Shadow on many occasions, but she is nimble enough to not actually get underfoot and become a speed bump.

Every time I tried to get closer to her or crouch down to take a photo at her level, she would start walking towards me (to the amusement of all her human cohorts).

My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. Photographed on Galiano Island in the early evening of July 3, 2017.

Mystique of the Great Blue Heron Wall Sticker

Just two feet away from me on a log, and surrounded by Wood Ducks, Mallards, Lesser Scaups, and American Coots was this Great Blue Heron, trying to catch a few winks in the sun. Blue Herons are one of the most commonly seen and distinctive birds in Metro Vancouver, frequenting marshes as well as ditches by freeways and highways.
