Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds which can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. This one was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline. Photographed on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours. When it makes an entrance, it really makes an entrance; it's no shrinking violet. Rare, though, is the moment when it stays still long enough to get a photo of it, but got it I did, as it waited for its turn to bathe in the waterfall.

A couple of Zebra Finches "posing" for my camera. One clearly has a sense of humor, and the other a (somewhat shocked) sense of propriety. These gregarious songbirds are popular pets for bird lovers, and are available in several color variations.

A Cheeky Pair of Zebra Finches Placemat

About 100 Snow Geese were making use of Garry Point Park as a layover point on Easter Sunday. At one point, the flock broke into two, and one of these decided to exercise their wing muscles with brief but stunning aerial maneuvers at sunset -- a dramatic show of unison and grace.

Also known by their other aliases of "Red Star" and "Rosy Posy" (my favourite), I found a bed of these small but hardy South African perennials flourishing in one of our local public gardens. Summer brings forth bright pink star-shaped flowers with their telltale hidden hearts -- low growing plants that make great ground cover.

Rhodohypoxis / Red Star / Rosy Posy Placemat

Another gorgeous loner, a late migrant Whimbrel, wanders the autumn shores on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in its (highly successful) search for crabs. This wading bird--normally gone by early fall in Metro Vancouver--has overstayed its welcome, to the delight of wildlife photographers, instead of heading to South America with its chums.

Caught Mr. (or Mrs.?) Three-Toed Black-Capped Chickadee by the old apple tree, with the pink leaves of the pieris japonica shrub in bloom behind it. A resident pair of these little resident songbirds is, once again, raising a new brood in the old nestbox, and keeping away the intruders. Photographed in April 2017.

This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

Colorful Leiothrix / Pekin Robin Songbird Notebook

Nothing says "you complete me" or "your better/other half" than these whimsical, wildlife-themed lovers' mugs.

This handsome fellow actually made a beeline to the wharf from which I was photographing a trio of Double-Crested Cormorants ... apparently all these avian "marina users" are quite comfortable around humans. Although they are the Queen's birds, Mute Swans are considered an invasive species in North America on account of their natural behaviours, which upset the native ecosystem, and efforts have been made to keep their numbers down. However, my subject, is just one of fewer than 300 wild Mute Swans who inhabit British Columbian waters.

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!

WWN Stunning Black Oystercatcher Shorebird with Clam

A rather interesting top-down view of a Great Blue Heron at the local wildlife refuge. I've been spotted by my subject, but this efficient (and, at times, ruthless) fisher is in no hurry to move from its spot. Great Blue Herons are the most commonly seen herons in Metro Vancouver, and may be even spotted in ditches along highways and freeways.
