About 100 Snow Geese were making use of Garry Point Park as a layover point on Easter Sunday. At one point, the flock broke into two, and one of these decided to exercise their wing muscles with brief but stunning aerial maneuvers at sunset -- a dramatic show of unison and grace.

Sometimes a mistake can be the path to a new technique. This Japanese Shaga, a small but ornate beardless iris also rather romantically known as the butterfly flower for its delicate, wing-like petals, was actually photographed outdoors under natural daylight after I forgot to reset shutter speed and aperture settings from the previous photo.

The second time I've seen Dunlins since first spotting a small flock huddled together in their breeding plumage (with their trademark black belly patches), on a cold spring day on the Iona Jetty spit in 2010. Three were part of a larger group of 10-12, who were fraternizing with a larger flock of Sanderlings (60) and a single out-of-season Semipalmated Plover (not pictured here).

My first (and closest) encounter with a Sooty Grouse at Burnaby Mountain. This handsome fellow was hardly shy around the photographers, but kept largely to the base of the trees and the shadows. When the other photographers had left,  he came out for a little one-on-one time, "treating" me to dances around the remaining photographer and softly modulated hoots -- even following me partway down to the playground!

The males engage in plenty of frog-like croaking, head-to-back arches, neck stretching, and wing flapping -- all maneuvers which are pretty much guaranteed to get them largely unnoticed if not completely ignored from the females of their own kind (who have seen it many times before).

Two of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. A male Green-Winged Teal enjoys the calm waters of Piper Spit/Burnaby Lake. This dabbling duck is tied with the Bufflehead, a diving duck, for the title of the smallest ducks in North America.

Handsome Green-Winged Teal Duck on Golden Pond Jigsaw Puzzle

Even on a hazy day, you can see forever. A million-dollar view of some of the Southern Gulf Islands from the top of Mount Galiano. The dragonflies were as thick as thieves at the highest point of Galiano Island, and 2-3 Turkey Vultures coasted 30-40 feet above our heads. We even witnessed a small (trio) of orca whales passing by. Not a bad reward for a relatively easy hike! Photographed in early July 2017.
