I'd hardly call a Spotted Towhee a cute little bird. The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie. However, this frontal shot of one eating seeds left by visitors captures its curiosity, chubbiness, and strikingly beautiful plumage. Photographed at the stone bridge of Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly late November afternoon.

When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! Saw more of the tiny Sanderlings at the Boundary Bay Regional Park beach, just before Valentine's Day 2017. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.

WWN A Hooded Merganser Who's Dressed to Impress

This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree. He proceeded to peck away at his perch, oblivious of the solitary camera lens trained on him and the many walkers on the trail.

Cute Downy Woodpecker Bird on Branch Magnet

An early morning walk in July 2015 brings us unexpectedly face to face with the normally distant and hard to photograph Killdeer. This is the father-to-be; his mate was guarding her precious clutch of eggs in a scrape under the watchful eyes of a Bald Eagle, also nesting, not 100 feet away!

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colors of his iridescent head visible.

Cute Bufflehead Duck at the Pond Magnet

The golfers on the fairway clearly didn't disturb this Eastern Cottontail Rabbit, who was busy munching away on the delicious and well-manicured greens. This one paused to mug for my camera, and then went right back to chewing on its verdant comestibles, unfazed by the attention.

Perched on a cherry tree is one of several resident Black-Capped Chickadees. Almost always in motion--particularly around the sunflower seed dispenser--this chubby backyard sentinel looked to be contemplating the future, with spring being just a week away. Photographed in mid-March 2018.

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. A very curious Holstein Friesian pauses to look at us from the Alaksen Wildlife Area as the rest of its herd (obviously responding to a cattle call of some sort) lumbers on without a backward glance. Not exactly what I expected to see while birding the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in late May 2016, but Westham Island *is* full of farms!!

Two of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Photographed on the first full day of spring 2017.
