Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colours of his iridescent head visible.

Always Dressed to Impress: A Curious Bufflehead Magnet

Perfectly reflected in the tranquil waters of this pond is this Northern Pintail drake. They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks almost all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Perched on a fallen log (and living up to his name) is this colorful drake, one of several Wood Duck “fixtures” at Piper Spit. Burnaby Lake is home to the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks–hands down, the most colorful waterfowl you’ll find in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Beautiful Pensive Wood Duck in the Marsh Magnet

With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.

WWN Stunning Tree Swallow on the Wire

A curious female Bufflehead does a swim by one of the big ponds at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary to investigate why there is suddenly a big flock of other ducks. Although insects and fish are the staples of their diet, I have noticed that handfuls of birdseed will bring one or two (generally, one male and one female) to investigate and partake of the free food.

A dark, overcast day lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee, who was perched on one of the fruit trees in our backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations.

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, nature-themed puzzle, which depicts a photo of clouds tinged with the colors of the rainbow, is great for improving muscle memory. This is an optical phenomenon known as cloud iridescence or irisation, and I was privileged to capture that moment on a cold winter's day as the sun was setting.

Beautiful Dazzling Rainbow in the Clouds Jigsaw Puzzle

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. Third time (and third day!) was finally the charm with the reclusive Band-Tailed Pigeon, North America's largest pigeon. A small, paparazzi-shy, and unusually late-migrating flock of 8 of these purple forest pigeons has been in the neighborhood for 2 days, but this one finally consented to having its photo taken through a window on a fine spring morning as it perched on the shepherd's crook (after very quietly flying onto one of the 100-foot tall Douglas Firs in the backyard)! Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds which can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of this sandpiper species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.

A mid-summer walk around Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon yielded the surprise of a raccoon. In fact, this one quietly preceded us, like a tour guide, for a hundred yards, to the cement bridge before joining a haze of other raccoons. S/he even stopped to give me a few angles ... all of which is very unnatural behaviour for a mammal who is more likely to be active at night!
