Long-Billed Curlews are the largest wading birds found in North America. They are generally solitary creatures for most of the year except during the breeding season, and their long decurved bills make them distinctive. The women have even more curvature to their bills than the males, and this lovely lady stood out from the gulls and crows at Surrey's Blackie Spit. Photographed in mid-July 2016.

A Curious Bewick's Wren in the Tree Photo Print

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. My first meeting with one of (at least) two Clark's Nutcrackers who were frequenting Manning Park Resort in the early morning and afternoon. Like Gray Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers are quite bold and will approach visitors in hopes of free food.

This is my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, and I really wished to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again, my first photos of it on a deciduous tree being nothing but blurs.

My wish was granted with one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree, a high-energy, multi-tasking (being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects) Golden-Crowned Kinglet, who nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

A Black-Capped Chickadee has a stretch on one of our pear trees. Another brood of babies was successfully raised this year -- but rather than using the old nestbox that ended up doubling as a wasps' hive last year, mom and dad wisely chose the brand new swallow nestbox that was situated in a different part of the backyard. 18-Spotted Yellow and Black Ladybug Classic Round Sticker

This isn't the first time I've seen a ladybug which wasn't red and spotted, but it is certainly the first one I've been able to photograph and count the number of spots on its carapace! This beneficial insect is busy nibbling the aphids on the old plum tree leaves (note: this leaf is *not* wet; it is covered in aphid poo!)

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, a dozen of these enchanting but highly reclusive songbirds were frequenting the trees and vocalizing near the Burnaby Lake Nature House at Piper Spit. Many were indulging in the generous winter feast of millet and sunflower seeds put out by some well-meaning birders. None seemed particularly concerned about the presence of photographers, and I daresay some of the subjects even worked the cameras with their pretty poses!
