This juvenile Bald Eagle came within 20 feet of me as it flew over my head during my walk through the local wildlife habitat on an early spring day in 2017. We locked eyes briefly (neither really daunted by the presence of the other), and then it continued to wing its way to a copse of dead trees where several others of its kind were roosting.

A couple of Hooded Merganser drakes put in a surprise appearance in one of our newer local ponds. These two are warming up their vocal chops in hopes of impressing the two hens in their small flock.

The perfect choice for bird lovers! Looking deceptively like a baby duck, this full grown Bufflehead hen struck the perfect pose for me at one of the inner ponds at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Curious "sentries" like this one will often detach themselves from the flock to satisfy their curiosity about those lenses pointed in their direction. I really doubt it's for the birdseed, unless we have discovered one with a sudden taste for them. :)  There was just enough afternoon sunlight left to reflect the blue skies in the waters, paint a catchlight in this Bufflehead's eyes, and cast a soft glow on her face.  With fall giving way to winter in just another week, we are seeing more and more of these tiny diving seaducks -- but always in small groups that tend to stay in waters far, far from human view. Though not skittish like Hooded Mergansers tend to be, I have yet to see a single Bufflehead set a webbed toe on land.

Cute Bufflehead Duck on Sunlit Waters Serving Tray

I've only met the Blue-Winged Teals this year, and each encounter has brought me progressively closer to these summering migrants! Like Gadwall drakes, Blue-Winged Teal drakes dress conservatively for their women. No flashy feathers are necessary -- just plenty of personality!

This Eurasian Wigeon drake flew in with three American Wigeon drakes, literally crashing the party when I was photographing the Hooded Mergansers. Plenty of surprise appearances today. Eurasian Wigeons are infrequent visitors to North America shores. This is my second encounter with the male of the former species.

Sandpipers (the smallest ones are known as "peeps") and plovers are some of the most enchanting--and boldest--shorebirds you'll encounter in Metro Vancouver. The smaller they are, the more you'll see them in large flocks, feeding along the shores.  Clockwise from top left: Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling, Killdeer, and Dunlin -- all shorebirds that I photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park, an internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) for thousands of migratory and resident birds, and a spectacular place to be in the fall and winter.

It's not a Pacific Northwest winter unless you see the Varied Thrush. One of my favorite backyard birds to see (and a highly elusive one at that), this songbird has a stunning beauty to match the hauntingly beautiful timbre of its song. This handsome fellow was foraging in the backyard with several other wintering birds when I photographed him from the second floor--giving me a rare bird's eye view of t him. We almost never see them during the summer when they spend that season northwards in Alaska, but the call of the colder seasons of the year brings them back to us. Photographed in mid-January 2017.

Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.

We are gifted with the all-too-brief presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of spring before they head to higher ground to breed. When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! Saw more of the tiny Sanderlings at the Boundary Bay Regional Park beach, just before Valentine's Day 2017. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.
