Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!

The early blooming pyracantha bush has proven to be very popular with a number of fall and winter birds, including this American Robin. Earlier this fall, I spotted six of these thrushes feasting away at the same time! 

My subject didn't need to share the pommes with another feathered friend, and didn't budge when I had the lens pointed her way from the front door. In fact, she continued to enjoy the bright red berries for a few moments more.

The lone representative of its species (a recently recognized and separate species of the black geese family), a Cackling Goose (once considered a Canada Goose subspecies), plies the waters of an inner pond at Jericho Park on a sunny and surprisingly warm-for-winter afternoon. A much shorter bill and smaller body size set this goose apart from its larger Canada Goose cousin.

Black Oystercatchers are one of the most approachable shorebirds in Metro Vancouver. Some will even walk right up to you--giving you the chance for lovely photo opportunities. I like this shot because there's a blue background (water) and grey (log) to set off that striking red bill, yellow eye, pink legs, and black and brown plumage.

This may be a Black Oystercatcher, but we saw only clams and mussels being deftly pried apart for their tasty flesh by these expert shuckers.

Having encountered Harlequin Ducks only at great distances before, seeing these two females up close sharing a quiet moment on a seaweed-covered rock at West Vancouver's Ambleside Beach gave me hope for future encounters with these small seaducks. Photographed in late August 2016.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! Community gardens are a wonderful place to see not just veggies and fruits, but a great variety of beautiful flowers. These beardless purple irises caught my eye at Richmond's Terra Nova Rural Park in late spring 2015.

WWN Elegant Maple Leaf Tulips

It's an avalanche of cuteness when a flock of Bushtits descend on the suet feeder in the backyard. However, these hyperactive bundles rarely hold still for a photo. This young fellow was an exception to the rule; while everyone else was busy engaged in feeding on the suet or looking for insects in the trees, he was happy to look pretty on the pear tree, and I was happy to oblige.
