Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.

These royal blue Cineraria flowers provide a dazzling (and welcome) burst of color for early spring gardens. Although these African natives and members of the daily family are self-seeding perennials, I call them "Goldilocks flowers", because they require a very specific amount of rain, sunshine, and temperature to thrive.

Airbnb for the birds! We were quite tickled to see how this Bewick's Wren was making itself very much at home in a long-vacated wren nestbox. This is not unusual to see during spring or summer, but completely unexpected on the second day of winter. My subject was content to showcase a few poses for me while catching a few rays of the midday winter sun. 2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. An adult Bald Eagle surveys its domain below from its lofty perch in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area. Metro Vancouver is home to thousands of these birds of prey, and seeing 25-50 a day throughout most of the year is not unheard of.

Bring on the birds of spring! A round, energetic ball of energy, this adult male Wilson's Warbler posed briefly on the grapevine with the white, bell-like flowers of the pieris japonica shrub in the background on a slightly overcast afternoon in mid-May 2018.

Isn't she lovely? This female Rufous hummingbird poses calmly for my camera on the old plum tree in the backyard. With the very early arrival (and disappearance) of the males in March and April as they migrate to as far north as Alaska, we have had a veritable dearth of yardbirds. Her continued presence means that life will become much more "interesting" for the resident Anna's (particularly the males). Not coincidentally, we are also seeing more birds in the backyard now.

Cute Zebra Finch Songbird Sitting Pretty Mug

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

My first sighting of an elusive Varied Thrush this fall. After seeing that my water-beaded friend had not moved from her perch for 5 minutes, I knew I had to get a shot of her from the other side of the window.  This is the closest I've ever gotten to a Varied Thrush, male or female. They do like to show up on rainy days, which makes photography a challenge. :)
