This photo was voted one of America's Favorite Birds. Over 250,000 votes were cast to see which 15 (of 42) birds were selected for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "America's Favorite Birds: 40 Beautiful Birds to Color" Coloring Book, (released Fall 2016). 

A male Green-Winged Teal enjoys the calm waters of Piper Spit/Burnaby Lake. This dabbling duck is tied with the Bufflehead, a diving duck, for the title of the smallest ducks in North America.

Handsome Green-Winged Teal Duck on Golden Pond Magnet

A curious female Bufflehead does a swim by one of the big ponds at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary to investigate why there is suddenly a big flock of other ducks. Although insects and fish are the staples of their diet, I have noticed that handfuls of birdseed will bring one or two (generally, one male and one female) to investigate and partake of the free food.

A Bufflehead Duck Swims By Magnet

I'd hardly call a Spotted Towhee a cute little bird. The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie; and the black, white, reddish-brown plumage it wears all year round are "power colours". Photographed at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly afternoon in late November 2015.

This photo was selected by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, to be featured in its "Backyard Birds and Blossoms" Coloring Book (release date Spring 2017).

Profile of a Spotted Towhee Magnet

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. Beautiful Buff-Breasted Sandpiper at the Beach Wall Decal

Although their rattling call has become a familiar sound to my ears, it's not easy to get a photo of the Belted Kingfisher in repose. By the time I've heard this well-dressed fisher, it's usually in motion, diving from its perch on a powerline or tree limb into the waters below to snag some unwitting piece of sushi. This lady was an exception, sitting quietly on a branch in the evening sun for several minutes before flying off to her next meal. With her crest up, she looks like she's doing the bird equivalent of a human raising an eyebrow. Most of the time, I tend to encounter the females, whom I consider to be the prettier of the time, with their reddish brown and blue necklaces. Photographed in late July 2016 at Colony Farm.

My second encounter with a male Mountain Bluebird. We are gifted, albeit very briefly, with the presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of the spring season before they head to higher ground to breed. Those stunning cerulean colors stand out on a dreary landscape, even from a distance. When he wasn't busy diving for insects on the local beach, he was highpointing it on driftwood and stalks of dessicated tansy. Photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park in early spring 2017.

Marigolds aren't just eye candy; they've been used for culinary (teas, salads) and medicinal (anti-inflammatory) purposes for hundreds of years in European cultures. These beautiful, aromatic and showy blooms bloom all summer long into fall and even until the first frost. They are a natural mosquito repellent, and may also keep flower munchers like deer from the pride and joy in your garden.
