The search for the male Mountain Bluebird at the North Jetty of Iona Island proved futile, but this blue bird -- perched on a twig near the chain link fence along Ferguson Road by the inner ponds -- didn't disappoint. 

The Tree Swallows have indeed returned to Iona Island, but we saw far fewer now than in March 2015 at this same point in time -- and the females had already shown up, too. I observed maybe 20 in flight and just a few perched like this fellow, and not a female in sight.

This is my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, and I really wished to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again, my first photos of it on a deciduous tree being nothing but blurs.

My wish was granted with one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree, a high-energy, multi-tasking (being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects) Golden-Crowned Kinglet, who nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

Curious American Robin Songbird in the Grass Magnet

Despite the many pots of butterfly bushes we have growing in the backyard, butterflies like this Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly who stop to drink their nectar are still a rare occurrence (we even have a butterfly motel!) This is an angled top-down shot of one. The visiting Rufous hummingbirds have also given these bushes a number of pokes.

Add a touch of nature to the kitchen with this wildlife-themed kitchen towel! Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. This one was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline. Photographed on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

Pyracantha coccinea or scarlet firethorn berries are popular with our yardbirds in the fall and winter, and the spiky branches give both perch and protection to our diners. Mass profusions of these tiny plump orange fruit attract American Robins, Golden-Crowned Sparrows, House Sparrows, and Black-Capped Chickadees -- a daily crowd that can depletes this great bounty within a few weeks. The handful of Canada Geese I spotted at the Boundary Bay Regional Park on December 31, 2015, were greatly outnumbered by a massive congregation of 3,000-5,000 Dunlins, a wide assortment of American Wigeons, Green-Winged Teals, Northern Pintails, and 70 Brants--but this quintet, picking their way through the floes nearer to shore for tidbits, were easier to photograph than the rest.

As with many yellow summer birds on my watch list, I have been pursuing this beautiful warbler and prolific singer for quite some time. Two years ago, I heard his trademark witchety-witchety-witchety birdsong and have since gotten few and frequently shaded glimpses of his rakish black mask and bright yellow breast through local shrubs and bushes. This is the closest I have come to photographing him out in the open.

It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) two such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden.
