Nothing draws the honeybees in mid/late May through June like the huge California Lilac that blooms with hundreds of bluish-purple clusters on the front lawn. In fact, this bush resembles a purple beehive in late spring/early summer when these tiny winged marvels congregate.

An "urban" Rough-Legged Hawk perches precariously on the top of a spindly young tree in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada. As I have seen this raptor several times near the local shopping mall, I can only assume that this is its territory--before and after development. Photographed on a late afternoon in mid-January 2018.

Such a pretty pest! I spotted this bright orange beetle on the yet-to-flower Lady's Mantle. Two more of its cohorts were also hanging around in the same vicinity. Hope they leave the asparagus plants alone! :)

Rufous Hummingbirds have usually left Metro Vancouver for Mexico by mid August, so it was a delight to see and photograph this exceedingly feisty straggler in the backyard. This little scrapper has been (successfully, for the past two days) giving grief to the juvenile male Anna's hummingbird who has owned the backyard for most of the summer (as well as the other feathered friends who visit), vigorously defending every flower and feeder in sight. This hybrid fruit tree branch has become its favorite perch, and gave me quite a few photographic opportunities. Photographed on September 4, 2016.

Nibbling tansy seeds in the wet cold wind at Boundary Bay Regional Park was the first Lincoln's Sparrow I've seen in the area. My third sighting of this sparrow, and my closest encounter with one to date.

The smallest and perhaps most strikingly colored falcon found in North America. In the avian kingdom, where females are often dressed in drab hues, the slate grey and barred, copper orange plumage of the female American Kestrel give her a dazzling beauty to rival that of her male counterpart.

Wood Ducks are the most colorful all-year-round resident waterfowl one can find in Metro Vancouver, Canada, and they are equally at home in the water, on land, or in the trees -- being the only duck species who can grasp logs and branches.
