Our first (and only) attempt (so far) to grow these tart but tasty heirloom tomatoes. So named Green Zebra on account of its exotic and striking dark green stripes on its bright lime green flesh, a two-tone color palette that remains, even when ripe.

Show off your love of nature with this wildlife-themed tile, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. This elegant wading bird is rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. If someone combined the adorably big head and black eyes of a Black-Capped Chickadee with the colors and bill of a Kookaburra in a Jay-sized body, they'd have the whimsically-named  Whiskeyjack. Also known by its less colorful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six of this hardy montane Canadian corvids at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables and give diners that irresistible liquid gaze of theirs in the hopes of free handouts.

Cute Grey Jay / Whiskeyjack Songbird on Fir Tree Ceramic Tile

Who ya calling a turkey? I spotted this handsome male Ring-Necked Pheasant foraging in the oddest of places ... not a marsh or wild woodland habitat, but the green well-maintained grass of a heritage air park! He did not seem concerned that a couple of camera lenses was trained on him, but, from time to time, would stand up on his legs, flap his wings, and give his best rooster impression, before returning to the task of foraging. On a rather birdless day, seeing this gamebird made my day. Photographed on Good Friday 2017.

A dark, overcast day lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee, who was perched on one of the fruit trees in our backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations.

Next to the Brown Hawker dragonfly who made a beeline for me last summer and decided that my denim-covered leg would make a nice warm perch for a few minutes, this extremely accommodating Canada Darner dragonfly has got to be one of my best insect subjects. S/he didn't twitch in the 30 minutes I spent photographing it, and as a matter of fact, stayed on the exterior of the house for at least another 15 minutes before flying off!

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colours of his iridescent head visible.
