A very curious Holstein Friesian pauses to look at us from the Alaksen Wildlife Area as the rest of its herd (obviously responding to a cattle call of some sort) lumbers on without a backward glance. Not exactly what I expected to see while birding the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in late May 2016, but Westham Island *is* full of farms!!

These hydrangea flowers were grown from a donation in which all but one of the three donor plants had died--but the sole survivor proved to be extremely prolific, and generated big fluffy blossoms in the softest pastel shades of pink, purple, and blue.

If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

A wonderful discovery in Elgin Heritage Park, dressed in burnt orange and black: one of two adult male Black-Headed Grosbeaks foraging in the trees at the start of the trail (with a male Downy Woodpecker for company). This fellow was so curious about me that he came down to a different tree and a lower branch to check out the photographer. Photographed in mid-May 2017.

My attempt to photograph a Rufous hummingbird feeding from the hot pink fuschia flowers on a sunny evening in late June 2016 ultimately proved to be fruitless ... but this Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly who came to pose in its stead was a wonderful consolation prize!

The skeptical expression on this nuthatch's face seems to say, "Another photo? Really? Don't you have enough already?"  He probably doesn't believe that I don't camp out at the base of the old plum tree with camera and long lens in hand, waiting for him to make an appearance. There are at least three Red-Breasted Nuthatches (two males and one female) who visit the backyard regularly since our first encounter with them last year, and they have been getting progressively bolder and bolder (even more so than the Black-Capped Chickadees, whom this male will even boot off to get to the sunflower seeds).

A Skeptical Red-Breasted Nuthatch Throw Pillow

Add a touch of nature and whimsy to any wall with this wildlife-themed photo print. The perfect choice for bird lovers! The baby of the family--literally. A family of three bushtits was noisily searching for bugs in the California Lilac--the pre-bedtime snack.  While Mom and Dad were actively foraging, this adorable little boy spent time looking pretty for the photographer.

2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. This handsome guy paused on the cherry tree just long enough for me to get him in all his golden goodness. Photographed in mid-May 2017.

An early morning walk in July 2015 brings us unexpectedly face to face with the normally distant and hard to photograph Killdeer. By an extra stroke of luck, this was one of a nesting pair of Killdeer, who had decided to "set up shop" not 100 feet away from a nesting pair of Bald Eagles!

A pair of Sandhill Cranes wades through the shallow waters of the local wildlife refuge on a cloudy mid-winter's day. These are the largest birds that can be seen in Metro Vancouver all year round, more often on the ground, but occasionally in the air, too. As wild (and large) as they are, the ones who frequent the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary will consent to being handfed, and indeed, sometimes demand disbursement of birdseed this way!

WWN Great Sandhill Cranes Wading through the Marsh

With its wide open spaces, the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area is home to many different species of songbirds as well as several raptors. I found the brown-tinged feathers on this rather bold Black-Capped Chickadee--who was anticipating a free handout of seeds--rather interesting. Perhaps a hybrid with a Chestnut-Backed Chickadee was one of its parents (or grandparents)?

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!
